CSUDH History: 2010s

March 2010: University named to the 2009 President's Higher Education Community Service Honor Roll with Distinction.

March 10, 2010: Dr. Karen Mason, associate professor of psychology, is awarded the Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Awards; Dr. Kate Fawver, associate professor of history, is honored with the Excellence in Service Award; and Dr. Sally Etcheto, professor of music, receives the Lyle E. Gibson Distinguished Teacher Award.

April 29, 2010: On the 50th anniversary of the founding of the university, the campus celebrates with a ribbon cutting to open the south wing addition of the Leo F. Cain Univeristy Library.

May 21, 2010: Former HUD Secreatary Henry Cisneros receives honorary doctorate from the CSU system and gives the keynote address at the Home Depot Center Tennis Stadium. As part of the CSU Nisei Diploma Project, special honorary degrees are handed out to Louise Isako Miyake Morita and Terushi Naritoku, two Japanese Americans whose education on CSU campuss was disrupted during World War II.

October 2010: University partners with the City of Carson to organize and host the inaugural Tri-CARSON reverse sprint triathlon.

November 2010: Alumnus Karen Bass (1990, B.S., health science) wins election the U.S. House of Representatives, becoming the first graduate of CSU Dominguez Hills to serve in Congress.

November 8, 2010: School of Nursing ribbon cutting to open on-campus clinical skills lab.

April 30, 2011: University organizes Native American Pow Wow, the first pow wow on campus since the 1970s.

May 7, 2011: Three students from California State University, Dominguez Hills take top honors at the 25th Annual CSU Student Research Competition.

May 20, 2011: Two alumni return to give keynote addresses during the 2011 Commencement exercises: Dr. John Tracy (Class of 76, B.S., physics) and Judge Scott Gordon (Class of 80, B.S., public administration). Tracy is also awarded and honorary Doctorate of Science.

June 22, 2011: Carlos Velez sworn in as University Police chief

June 2011: Gopherus morafkai, a new species of desert tortoise, is named for the late Dr. David J. Morafka, who taught in the biology department from 1972 to 2002.

July 2011: President García is appointed by President Barack Obama to serve on the President’s Advisory Commission on Educational Excellence for Hispanics

August 2011: $1 million gift from the Annenberg Foundation establishes the Wallis Annenberg Endowed Professorship for Innovation in STEM Education, the university’s first endowed professorship.

September 22, 2011: University cuts ribbon on Veteran Student Programs (VSP) center in the Loker Student Union.

November 17, 2011: CSU Dominguez Hills faculty participate in one-day strike against lost pay raises from the 2008-09 and 2009-10 academic years.

January 25 2012: President García named by the CSU Board of Trustees as the new president at CSU Fullerton.

February 20, 2012: Ramon Torrecilha becomes the university’s provost and vice president for academic affairs

March 15, 2012: Cyril “Ed” Zoerner, professor and chair of the English department, receives the 2012 Lyle E. Gibson Dominguez Hills Distinguished Teacher Award, and Carl Sneed, associate professor of the psychology department, is awarded the 2012 Excellence in Research, Scholarship and Creative Activity Award.

April 3, 2012: CSU Dominguez Hills hosts the White House Initiative on Educational Excellence for Hispanics President’s Advisory Commission meeting in the Loker Student Union.

April 10, 2012: The CSU Board of Trustees announces the selection of Dr. Willie J. Hagan as interim president of CSU Dominguez Hills, effective June 11.

May 18 and 19, 2012: 3,100 graduates participate in commencement, divided into five college-based ceremonies over two days.

June 31, 2012: CSU Dominguez Hills raises $4.12 million, one of the strong fundraising years in campus history.

July 1, 2012: College of Business Administration and Public Policy welcomes a new dean, Dr. Joseph Wen.

August 3-10, 2012: Alumnus Carmelita Jeter (2006, B.S., physical education) wins gold, silver and bronze in track and field competition at the 2012 London Summer Olympic Games.

September 11, 2012: The Donald P. and Katherine B. Loker Student Union celebrates its 20th anniversary.

May 22, 2013: The CSU Board of Trustees appoints Dr. Willie J. Hagan as permanent president of California State University, Dominguez Hills.
