African American Political & Economic Institute

It is the mission and purpose of the California African American Political and Economic Institute (CAAPEI) to establish, operate and maintain a relevant center for the continuing study of the dynamics of African American political and economic contributions in California from the 20th century throughout the 21st. CAAPEI will ultimately become a primary clearinghouse of publicly disseminated information on the subject of the past, present and future of African American political leadership in California; it will become an on-going academic and community research entity particularly dealing with economic and political development issues; it will become an archives for the collection and preservation of the papers and contributions of California political and economic leaders; it will become a facility to coordinate the training of youth for involvement and participation in Californian, and eventually national, public service and politics; and it will become a headquarters for the coordination of conferences, seminars and symposia associated with those co-joined subjects. All such activities will be open to the entire university and to the general public.

CSUDH Infant-Toddler Development Center

The CSUDH Infant-Toddler Development Center is a program for children with developmental delays from 18 to 36 months of age who are referred by the Regional Centers for the Developmentally Challenged. The children range from the severely and profoundly disabled to those at risk for developmental delays. The center is open 5 days a week, 12 months a year, and offers two sessions. The center also serves as a practicum site for students at CSUDH and other colleges and uses a transdisciplinary approach to teaching. Beginning fall 2008, the center plans to inaugurate a full-inclusion program, enrolling up to 12 children who are not at risk in each session.

The Center for History-Social Science Education is dedicated to the pursuit of excellence in history and social science education. The Center is affiliated with the California History-Social Science Project. The Center provides professional development for K-12 teachers.  Historian and other specialists work collaboratively with teachers to improve the teaching and learning of history-social science in the schools.

Center for Learning and Academic Support Services (C.L.A.S.S.)

C.L.A.S.S. was created to provide academic support for students as they pursue their academic and professional goals. With the understanding that different students present different needs, the center provides academic support services such as tutoring in a wide range of subjects, workshops designed to enhance and develop students’ reading writing critical thinking basic math, science and study skills. The center also provides access to multiplatform computer technologies. Online learning support is also available. Family tutoring is offered on a limited basis to students and their school aged children.

The Center for Mathematics and Science Education (CMSE) seeks to improve instruction in mathematics and science by supporting activities related to pedagogy, research, content acquisition, leadership, and curriculum development.

 

Center for Teaching and Learning

This Center provides instructional and professional development support services to faculty. CTL works to build community among faculty around teaching and learning issues by sponsoring workshops and peer support programs. CTL offers grants to faculty for travel to present research, to attend teaching and learning conferences, and for course development.

The Center for Teaching Careers supports the undergraduate teacher preparation programs by serving as the initial contact for prospective and new students at Dominguez Hills who are interested in pursuing teaching careers. The center will also provide opportunities for early field experiences for students in single and multiple subject matter preparation programs, as required by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC).

Center for the Advancement of Diversity in Science and Mathematics

The Center’s primary focus is to increase the number of diverse individuals in the sciences, with diversity being broadly defined, such as ethnicity, race, gender, and socio-economic status. The Center is located in the College of Natural and Behavioral Sciences but is a University Center and serves the needs of science and mathematics faculty in other Colleges as well. Goals for the Center will be 1) to increase the number of diverse students in the sciences and mathematics, 2) to sponsor events that focus on increasing diversity in math and science, 3) to support a “pipeline” of math and science activities from middle school, through high school and community college, to California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH), 4) to increase the tutoring and mentoring in the sciences and math at CSUDH, 5) to serve as a catalyst for new programs and initiatives and 6) to develop initiatives and programs that will serve as models for other universities.

The Center for Training and Development provides workforce development and customized curricula for employers primarily in the South Bay and Los Angeles areas.

Center for Urban Environment Research (CUER)

The CUER’s main purpose is to coordinate, support, and expand urban environmental activities at California State University Dominguez Hills (CSUDH). In this regard, the Center has initiated an interdisciplinary Master of Science Degree in Environmental Science. The new degree will prepare students for environmental positions in government, consulting, research, and advanced studies. Through extramural funding, the Center has acquired and updated new facilities and instrumentation used for environmental research. This includes an upgraded greenhouse, complete with native species propagation area, and a new ecology laboratory. The Center also provides outreach to students and the local community giving them the opportunity to participate in environmentally related scientific inquiry.

Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity and Internalization

The Institute for the Study of Cultural Diversity and Internationalization (ISCDI) has established a campus repository of educational resources for faculty, students, and staff. Weekly the Institute presents an Educational Lunch Series program that students, community guests and staff attend. We work with other programs on campus such as Extended Education, Women’s Center and the Older Adult Center by committing our energies toward bringing our community into our campus life. We also provide outreach programs to our local senior community which helps to support their continued education and knowledge of our university programs.

The Multicultural Center

The Multicultural Center serves as a focal point on campus for creating intercultural awareness, sensitivity and communication. The Center is a safe haven for individuals and groups to explore not only their own ethnicity but all ethnicities. The Center provides cultural programming, campus community involvement, and volunteer and leadership opportunities for students and staff. Other programs include Diversity Chats, Human Relations retreats, a cultural resource library and opportunities for co-sponsorship with other groups and departments on campus.

Urban Community Research Center

Urban Community Research Center (UCRC) is a multidisciplinary applied research center focused on the needs, problems and solutions that arise in urban areas with a special focus on the South Bay Region of the Los Angeles Basin. Goals of the center include conducting high quality research on urban change and social problems, providing social scientific expertise from CSUDH faculty to community-based organizations, governments, and other entities in the South Bay Region and beyond, and creating opportunities for students to receive training opportunities through involvement in applied research projects.
