Position Summary: The Department of Africana Studies at California State University, Dominguez Hills seeks candidates in the area of Africana History and/or Africana Socio-Psychology Behaviors to complement existing specialties in the program. The candidates will be expected to teach general education, survey and African Studies courses in their areas of specialization. Candidates for the Africana History position will be responsible for teaching courses such as History of African Peoples: 1450-1888 and the History of African Peoples: 1888 to present. Candidates for the Africana Socio-Psychology Behaviors position will be responsible for teaching courses such as Africana Family, Africana Popular Culture, Africana Womenist, Africana Social Patterns and Behaviors. The Department has a global orientation and is dedicated to exposing students to an African world perspective. Qualifications: The Department prefers candidates with an earned Ph.D from an accredited university in History, Sociology, Psychology, African Studies, African American Studies or other relevant disciplines. ABD’s may also be considered but Ph.D. must be completed and verified by end of the first year of appointment. Teaching experience in an urban university preferred. Candidates must demonstrate excellence in teaching and meaningful scholarship in Africana Studies. Candidates with experience in mentoring students are highly desirable. Candidates must be able to demonstrate participation in the national/international dialogue on the discipline through participation in relevant professional associations and membership in those that directly shape the field. Primary Duties and Responsibilities: Teach four courses per semester. Work with a team of faculty from other Ethnic/Area Studies units to develop an innovative, collaborative degree program. Participate in teaching, research, and community service within the framework of a communiversity. Participate in the development of the Department’s curriculum, faculty governance, student advising and mentoring program Rank and Salary: Appointment will be at the Assistant Professor/or Associate Professor. Salary is dependent of qualifications and professional experience.
