African American History Month Committee
Policy and Procedures
I Mission Statement
The African-American History Month Committee primary mission is to plan, organize and coordinate the programs and activities associated with the annual African-American History Month celebration.
II Purpose
The purpose of the AAHMC committee is to organize intellectual programs and cultural activities, which explore the depth and diversity of the African global experiences and their contributions to world civilization.
III Objectives
- To enhance the university community appreciation and understanding of people of African descent culture and life experiences.
- To enhance educational and learn-ability of the campus community.
- To enhance the social interaction among the various racial, ethnic, and social classes on the university campus.
- To foster a greater understanding and respect among African American Students, Staff, and faculty about African world civilizations and cultures.
- To promote African world arts, aesthetics, philosophy, transgenerational memories and life experiences.
- To support student initiative programs, social events, and cultural activities that support student learning and development.
- To support community based art and cultural events as well as social and intellectual programming.
IV Programs and Activities
- All scheduled African American history month programs and activities must be
reviewed and approved by the African American History Month Committee.
- The African American History Month Committee will only sponsor those programs,
art and cultural events, and social activities that promote and support the University's mission and goals.
V Publish materials
- All intellectual and historical material published under auspices of the AAHMC must be approved by a review committee. The chair will appoint a review committee composed of two-faculty members and a staff member or administrator.
- All published material must meet the prevailing academic criteria and standards.
VI Committee Appointment
The chair of the Africana Studies Department will appoint the African American History Month Committee members. The Committee will be composed of twelve to fifteen members selected from a cross section of the University Community.
VII Duties of Committee
The duties of committee are to approve all programs and activities associated with the African American History Month Celebration.
