The Department of Africana Studies
“A Place Where Scholars, Thinkers and Leaders are Nurtured”

Southern California Africana Studies Collaborative
Hosted by
The Department of Africana Studies
San Diego State University

Introduction

Over the past thirty years, there has been very little if any coordination or collaboration between the Africana Studies on the various college and university campuses. Although the state of California has a large number of colleges and universities within commuting distance to each other, the campuses have not coordinated their Africana Studies curricula offerings or developed any other significant collaborative relationships. The Southern California Africana Studies Collaborative was created to provide greater coordination and cooperation between the various Africana Studies programs in the area. We believe that an Africana Studies Consortium would provide the forum for this to occur. Moreover, the SCASC could serve as a conduit for establishing the transfer agreement between the various campuses.

Purpose

The purpose of the California Statewide Africana Studies Collaborative (SCASC) is to promote the improvement of communication, coordination, and collaboration among Africana Studies programs and faculty in the region. The primary functions of the Southern California Africana Studies Collaborative are to coordinate curricula, research, and community activities between the various department and programs. The consortium will provide scholars in the area with the opportunity to collaborate with other scholars on various projects. The Collaborative will provide an academic forum for administrators and scholars in Africana Studies to work together in promoting academic excellence and social responsibility.

Goals

  • To improve the communication between Africana Studies administrators in South California.
  • To provide opportunity for scholars to share their academic interests with others who have similar interests.
  • To create the opportunity to collaborate with other scholars on research and publishing projects.
  • To coordinate and cooperate the development Africana Studies curriculum offerings in the state.
