I Preface
The Charles and Beverly Cook Scholarship Fund is dedicated in the honor of two outstanding African American activist who through their tireless commitment to community empowerment and service have improved the life opportunities and outlook for many people.
II Mission
The mission of the Charles and Beverly Cook Scholarship fund in to establish a resource for the education of students in the field of Africana Studies, Communications and Journalism at California State University, Dominguez Hills. The scholarships will be awarded to students annually based on merit and need.
III Mission
The primary goal of the Charles and Beverly Cook Scholarship Fund is to support the development of professional training in the field of Africana Studies, Communication and Journalism for students who are interested in working in primarily Africana Communities. The scholarships will be established through various fundraising activities that will include the support of the LA Watts Times Newspaper, established by Mr. and Mrs. Cook.
IV Objectives
- To support the education of Africana professionals in journalism and communication at California State University, Dominguez Hills.
- To support the development of journalism and communication education which related to the Africana experience.
- To promote the understanding and respect among African American students, staff, and faculty about the role of the Africana press in African American life and culture.
- To support Africana student sponsored programs.
- To support the Black Press and California State University, Dominguez Hills collaborative educational programming.
V Duties of the Board
The Board is responsible for the administration of the Scholarship fund. The Board also will be responsible for approving all programs and activities associated with the Charles and Beverly Cook Scholarship fund.
VI Appointment of Board Members
The Chairperson of the Department of Africana Studies and the LA Watts Times Newspaper will jointly appoint the members of the Board. The Board shall be composed of nine members selected from a cross section of the community, representatives from University Advancement and the Department of Africana Studies.
