Carson, CA -- Teaming with the city of Carson,
the Cal State Dominguez Hills men's basketball team extended
invitation to boys and girls from Carson to participate in a free
basketball minicamp last December 27 in the Torodome, echoing the
season of goodwill giving.
Organized by CSUDH men's basketball head coach
Larry Hauser, 51 kids ranging from 6-16 enjoyed six hours of
basketball fundamentals courtesy of the Toros staff and players.
The day's festivities began at 8:00 a.m. as the
campers enjoyed an up-close-and-personable view of the Toro men
conducting their normal practice regimen. After a quick break
followed the 1½-hour practice session, the coaching staff and
players began separate half-hour clinics focusing on basketball
fundamentals, ball-handling, shooting, and both individual and
team play (one-on-one, two-on-two, etc.). During these intervals,
the kids received hands-on lessons and learned proper offensive
and defensive techniques, including footwork, positioning and
all-around fundamental skills.
In all, the Toros coaches and players donated
120 man hours to the local community and distributed free passes
to all remaining CSUDH home games, giving the kids of Carson
indelible memories with which to continue the holiday spirit.
"I was really proud of the way my
players interacted with the young campers, and was amazed at how
attentive and well-mannered they were while sitting through an
hour and a half of a college basketball practice," Hauser
reflected. "When it was time to play and enjoy themselves,
the campers learned a lot of basketball, learned some fundamental
skills they could take home, and had a lot of fun."
