Walnut Creek, CA -- After narrowly missing out
on last seasons California Collegiate Athletic Association
(CCAA) womens soccer tournament by virtue of a tiebreak, Cal
State Dominguez Hills was tabbed for a 2nd-place finish in the
South Division, according to a poll of the league head coaches.
Defending CCAA Champion UC San Diego was the
near unanimous choice to repeat as conference champions, earning
eight of the possible 11 votes cast, and all 10 first-place
division votes. UCSD won its sixth CCAA title a year ago and
advanced to the national quarterfinals before finishing the season
with a 20-2-2 overall record, including a 13-2-1 conference
record.
The Toros, who finished 2006 with 11-8-1
overall and 10-5-1 CCAA records, return nine seniors on the 2007
squad, including five who complete their fourth and final year in
Cardinal & Gold. Second-team All-Region selection Sandy
Lloyd (Fountain Valley, CA/Fountain Valley HS) and 1st-team
All-CCAA selection Corrie Hirokawa (Torrance, CA/North HS),
along with Amy Livergood (Torrance, CA/North HS) and Fawna
Waldo (Lakewood, CA/Mayfair HS) have combined to play in 261
of 264 total games in their careers, missing a total of seven
starts amongst them, while Jennifer Jimenez (Gardena,
CA/Bishop Montgomery HS) completes the quintet of Toros who
have three years of experience under their belts.
Chico State is expected to win its second
straight North Division title after receiving eight first-place
division votes and two tournament champion votes,
while Sonoma State received the remaining tournament
champion nod.
The Toros kick off their regular season on
Friday, August 24, as CSUDH hosts perennial power University of
Nebraska Omaha, with first kick scheduled for 7:00 pm in Toro
Stadium.
