An Introduction to the Issues and the Repository

The rise of the Internet, changes in technology and new federal and state legislation have made issues surrounding academic policy and the Internet increasingly central to institutional governance, teaching practice, and research methods. Campuses are duplicating efforts in researching and writing these polices. The CSU has a rich tradition of sharing information and working in cross-campus teams, but because policy creation and adaptation can be politically charged, and because policies are made and approved at the institutional level, institutions rarely collaborate on policy creation or revision of existing ones. This repository is designed to provide campuses models and examples of policies currently in place at other CSU's. The policies can be used as guidelines and can be edited to address each campuses specific need.

The policies to be addressed are:

  • Intellectual Property - Who owns what? I.e., what ís the relationship between institutional and individual ownership of digitized instructional materials? We'll investigate how our policies compare to policies in place at other universities.

  • Web Accessibility - What does it take to make a Web site accessible to disabled persons? Let's discuss the importance of and forms of compliance with Section 508 and the ADA and the promotion of compliance at your campus.

  • Distance Education - What are instructors' responsibilities when creating online classes in terms of curriculum, interaction, communication, etc.?

  • Copyright - Microsoft, RIAA, and others are taking copyrights more seriously every day, and lawsuits are proving that. What does the TEACH Act mean to distance education? Let's discuss steps to protecting our campuses from copyright infringement lawsuits.
