Showcase (Studio Art)
Feb. 2 - March 1, 2011
University Art Gallery
Opening reception: Feb 2, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m.
The Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition concept grew from the desire to present a wide variety of sculptural ideas, styles and materials as the small shoeboxsize of this exhibit provides broader exposure to contemporary sculpture.
The exhibition will be comprised of 80 works of art by invited artists, many of whom have attained national and international recognition. The 10th International Shoebox Sculpture Exhibition is organized by the University of Hawaii Art Gallery and supported in part by a grant from the Hawaii State Foundation on Culture and the Arts.
Subvertisements: Using Ads and Logos for Protest - Student Showcase (Design)
March 9 – April 13, 2011
University Art Gallery
Opening reception: March 9, 5:30 - 7:30 p.m. Organized in conjunction with the Center for the Study of Political Graphics and curated by Michele Bury, Associate Professor, CSU Dominguez Hills, this exhibition includes 100 posters where logos and ads are visually subverted. Throughout the
world, political artists are taking advantage of highly marketed advertising campaigns to bring diverse social causes to the forefront. An iPod ad becomes an image of torture in Abu Ghraib prison. Insecticide “Raid” becomes anti-immigrant spray “Fraid.” Whether they are protesting the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, drawing our attention to sweatshop labor, or opposing the use of pesticides and the BP oil spill, these posters provide an alternative view of reality.
