Financial Aid Information: Applying for a Federal Student Loan
Students who wish to apply for financial aid are required to file a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). You can visit our Apply for Financial Aid page for detailed instructions.
Eligibility
As a Humanities External Degree Student, you are eligible to borrow a William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan for up to the full amount of your registration fees. Students must enroll in a minimum of four (4) graduate units per term and maintain a minimum grade point average of 3.0. Your initial Direct Loan Award will be based on the minimum number of units allowed (4 units). If you enroll in more than 4 units your award will be automatically adjusted to cover the complete cost of your fees. When a loan is certified it will be for the amount of your registration fee plus the .5% origination fee. For example, if you enroll in 4 units your fees will $900. It will be increased by 05% for a revised award of $904. The .5% is then deducted to pay your origination fees and the remaining amount will cover your registration fees.
For your William D. Ford Federal Direct Loan to cover your fees, you must complete the following two requirements. Failure to do so may prevent processing and/or payment of your loan.
- Loan Entrance Counseling: Students receiving a loan for the first time, or who took a leave for one year or more, are required to complete an Entrance Counseling Session. You may fulfill this requirement online at http://www.dlssonline.com. Once completed the quiz results will be transmitted electronically to the Financial Aid Office within 3 business days.
- Electronic Master Promissory Note (MPN): Once a student applies for financial aid the U.S. Department of Education sends the student a Personal Identification Number (PIN). The student is to use the PIN to complete their MPN online at http://dlenote.ed.gov. This site will guide you through the process step by step. Once completed your MPN will be transmitted electronically to the Financial Aid Office within 5 to 10 business days. If you do not have web access please contact the Financial Aid Office.
Any questions regarding your financial aid application or processing should be directed to Michelle Matthews in the Financial Aid Office via telephone at (310) 243-3691 or via email at mmatthews@csudh.edu.
