Academic Information for Transfer Students

The Bachelor of Arts Degree at California State University, Dominguez Hills requires 120 semester units. The Bachelor of Science degree may require up to 132 semester units. For either degree, a minimum 40 units must be upper division units. Students often select a major based on personal interest, academic strengths, faculty advice, or career goals.

Degree requirements are divided among a major, General Education (G.E.), and electives. Students may also choose to complete a minor or a second major. Students must complete all degree requirements for each major or minor before graduation. Upper division courses counted in one major or minor cannot satisfy requirements in the second major or minor.

Major requirements range from 28 to 96 units depending upon the major with an average of 39 units. The default catalog year for the major and for General Education is the year of admission to the university. Students in continuous attendance from California public colleges may claim the year they began college.

The General Education curriculum requires 55 to 59 units, including nine units of upper division courses. You must take at least nine units General Education in residence at CSUDH. See an advisor at the University Advisement Center for a complete G.E. review.

Similar to majors, minors offer a coherent, integrated pattern of lower and upper division courses. Minors average about 15 units. Minors are optional but offer the student a recognized, secondary field of knowledge for career enhancement or graduate school preparation. Most academic departments offer a minor.

The University accepts a maximum of 70 semester units from community colleges. There is no limit on units from 4 year colleges or universities. However, you must take at least 30 semester units in residence at CSUDH. Of these residence units, at least 24 must be upper division and 12 must be in the major. At least one half the upper division units used to satisfy the minor must be taken in residence at CSUDH.

Upper division (Junior/Senior) courses are numbered 300 - 499, lower division (Freshman/Sophomore) 100 - 299, and non-degree college preparation courses are numbered 1 – 99.

A total of 24 semester units graded Credit/No Credit (CR/NC) can be applied to the Bachelor=s degree. The CR/NC units may satisfy G.E. requirements, electives, or up to 50% of the units required by a minor. However, all units used to satisfy the major or prerequisites to the major must be taken for a letter grade. The Credit grade is equivalent to a C or better and the No Credit grade is equivalent to a C-, D+, D, F, IC, or WU. CR/NC grades do not contribute towards your GPA.
