The purpose of these procedures are to provide safe methods for CSUDH employees to work with and around the asbestos containing building materials identified on our campus.
Class III asbestos work means repair and maintenance operations, where asbestos containing material, including thermal system insulation and surfacing asbestos containing material and presumed asbestos containing material, is likely to be disturbed.
Thermal system insulation (TSI) means asbestos containing material applied to pipes, fittings, boilers, breeching, tanks, ducts or other structural components to prevent heat loss or gain.
Surfacing asbestos containing material means material that is sprayed, troweled-on or otherwise applied to surfaces. Examples are acoustical plaster on ceilings and fireproofing materials on structural members, or other materials on surfaces for acoustical, fireproofing, and other purposes.
All employees performing Class III asbestos work are required to attend a 16-hour asbestos operations and maintenance training class with an annual refresher. Only Class III asbestos work is allowed to be performed by CSUDH employees. All other types of asbestos work are required to be performed by a licensed asbestos abatement contractor.
Typically there are three activities performed on campus that involve asbestos:
1. Replacement of light bulbs on the 5th floor ceiling of ERC.
2. The use of glove bags on thermal system insulation.
3. Removal of mastic material on baseboards.
Basic precautions are as follows:
1. Barricade removal area with caution tape and post asbestos warning signs.
2. All non-asbestos trained personnel are to be removed from the area.
3. Wear respiratory protection with HEPA filters.
4. Use wet methods. Spray asbestos material that will be disturbed with water.
5. Use impermeable drop cloths below the removal site.
6. Wear rubber gloves.
7. Removal of mastic is best performed with products that dissolve the mastic.
8. Place all asbestos material into labeled and double-bagged disposal bag. Removal is limited to one 60”X60” glove bag or waste bag only.
9. Clean up with vacuums equipped with HEPA filters. Never dry sweep or use compressed air.
10. Wash hands when work is completed.
11. Contact RM/EHOS for proper disposal of asbestos material.
When working with asbestos it is important to follow the procedures outlined in the operations and maintenance training and California Code of Regulations, Title 8, Section 1529.
