Library Project Overview
The CSU Dominguez Hills, Library Addition will construct a 5-story addition (approximately 140,000 sq. ft.) to the south side of the existing Leo F. Cain Library. The new state-of-the-art library facility will include instructional spaces, group study rooms, technical processing and public service areas. The addition will improve access to all library resources, and create an optimal environment in which to study, perform library research, and assimilate the knowledge necessary to succeed in today’s job marketplace .The Center for Teaching and Learning will be incorporated into the building to provide faculty development services to make this facility a complete learning centered environment.
The 5-story structure will be connected at the ground floor with a 1-story extension to the existing building providing for an exterior patio enclosed from the general public to provide connection to the existing building. On the West side, will be patios and bridges connecting the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th floors to each floor of the existing library. This combination of bridges and patio provide the necessary connection to allow the addition to be part of an integrated library. The addition will be dominated by windows and some pre-cast concrete panels on the north side providing the indirect lighting which is the best light for the reader stations that will be sited along the north wall. A large courtyard between the two buildings will provide a relaxed outdoor learning environment. Construction began October 2007 and expected completion is late 2009.
Benefits
- The additional 1600 reader stations, combined with existing space, will provide sufficient resource information space to serve 12,000 FTE in support of the University’s Master Plan.
- Provides new student spaces (additional computer learning labs, group study rooms, a multicultural reading room and gallery); and increases library book stack area by using movable aisle compact storage and state-of-the-art archival storage.
- Incorporates sustainable design features to significantly reduce energy usage, such as window orientation and Low-E glazing to reduce solar heat gain, sun shelves to distribute natural light further into building core. Building occupancy sensors and controls to lower and manage energy consumption.
