Campus Power Shortage Information

Alert
Status

We have all heard a great deal about rolling blackouts and Stage III power alerts.   While this is of concern to us, we do not anticipate that this will have a significant prolonged negative impact on our operations.  Where there have been rolling blackouts, they have been limited to less than two hours.  Many of you may be aware that some of the CSU campuses have closed their campuses early due to these Stage III alerts.  The reason for our campus not taking a similar action is because we elected a different rate structure with Enron, our electricity provider.  When the CSU entered into a contract two years ago for a long-term power supply rate structure, some campuses selected a reduced interruptible rate structure.  With this reduced rate structure, these campuses accepted the risk that in the event of Stage III power alerts, they would take drastic measures in reducing their energy consumption.  CSU Dominguez Hills did not assume that risk and is not immediately impacted when a Stage III power alert is announced.  We would, however, be impacted if rolling blackouts do occur.

What You Should Know
  • In order to support the university's academic mission, our campus will not close down during a daytime blackout unless it is predicted that the duration of the blackout is going to be more than 2 or 3 hours.
  • For the safety of our campus community, any blackouts that occur during the evening hours will cause cancellation of the classes and campus closure until the following morning.
  • At present, energy conservation procedures are in effect. All students, faculty and staff are requested to follow these guidelines and find additional ways to help reduce power usage on campus.
  • Should a blackout occur, please remain calm and follow the guidelines linked from this page.
  • If you have any other questions about rolling blackouts, please consult the Frequently Asked Questions page.
