PROJECT STATUS REPORT – MAY 2004

We have a number of projects underway on campus.  The following is the status of these projects and their expected completion dates:

Small College Complex -Building 5                                                  Project Completion Date:               May 31, 2004

Building 5 is undergoing a major remodeling for use by the College of Education. The project includes a new roof, a new HVAC system, remodel to the exterior and reconfiguration of the interior spaces to provide for approximately 3,000 sq. ft. of office space.  Additionally, the building will house a new 960 sq. ft. classroom (45 seats) that is being pre-wired for future use as a "smart" classroom.

VPN Service                                                                                       Completion Date:                            June 30, 2004

VPN (Virtual Private Network) is a technology which permits authenticated faculty and staff to connect their home computers to the University’s computer network through a secure tunnel over the open Internet.  The communication between the home computer and the University’s network is encrypted and invisible to other people on the Internet.  It is an ideal means for those who would like to use Microsoft Outlook on their home computers in the same way as they do on campus.  VPN also makes it possible for faculty and staff to synchronize the calendars on their hand-held devices, such as Palm Pilot, with Outlook Calendar on the University’s network.  Information Technology staff have set up the VPN server and are testing this new service with a group of selected faculty and staff members.  If all works well, we will release this new service to the campus community by June 30, 2004

Campus-wide Wireless Project                                                           Completion Date:                          June 30, 2004

Thanks to a fund awarded by ASI, Information Technology staff are planning to deploy a campus-wide wireless network.  The wireless network will cover all open areas on campus, except for the parking lots.  With the wireless network, students can use laptop computers to connect to the University’s computer network to register, check grades, take online courses, and check email.  Faculty and staff can also use the wireless network.  To ensure network security, authentication is required.  Students, faculty and staff can use their existing Pipeline/email ID and passwords to get authenticated and use the wireless network.

Motion Detector and Panic Alarm Installation                                   Completion Date:                               June 2004

Welch Hall

Many offices and departments which handle sensitive issues and financial matters migrated to Welch Hall upon its completion.  In order to maintain security and safety of personnel and assets located in these offices, panic alarms and motion detectors will be installed.

Electrical Infrastructure Project                                                          Completion Date:                            August 2004

This project is renovating and upgrading the 12KV electrical distribution system replacing 34,000 feet of 12KV electrical cable and 14 switches primarily in the buildings built before 1980 and the campus main switchgear in the Central Plant.  The Project will cost $2,790,000. The construction will take about one year.  Proposition 47 on the November 5, 2002 ballot is the funding source for this project.

New Voice Mail                                                                                    Completion Date:                September 1, 2004

Information Technology staff are preparing to upgrade the existing voice mail system.  The new voice mail system has unified messaging capabilities (linking the voice mail system with the campus email system).  Initially, due to limited user licenses, the unified messaging feature will be available only to a small test group.  If funding is provided in the future, this feature would be available for faculty, staff and administrators.

Enhance Classroom Telephone                                                            Completion Date:                September 1, 2004

Emergency Announcement System

Information Technology staff are enhancing the capacity of our telephone emergency announcement system for classrooms.  At present, because of the limitation on the phone switch software, all the classroom phones are connected in two groups.  When making an emergency announcement, we have to broadcast the emergency announcement to a group of buildings even though the announcement may only be necessary for one building. With the upgrade of the telephone switch software and the installation of necessary hardware, we will be able to group the classrooms into smaller groups, and select a particular classroom building to make the emergency announcement.

Grab ‘n Go Toros 2                                                                               Completion Date:                   September 2004

Food Outlet in SBS E 216

In a continuing effort to provide additional food service venues, the Foundation will be opening a second "grab-and-go" outlet on campus.  To be located on the second floor of the SBS building (E 216), the concept will be very similar to the "Grab 'n Go Toros" store that opened in Welch Hall last August.  A variety of sandwiches, salads, snacks and beverages will be offered.  Hours of operation are expected to be 7:30 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday - Thursday; 8:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Friday; and 8:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. on Saturday.  The SBS Grab ‘n Go is scheduled to open September 2004.

Infant Toddler Center.

As part of the agreement with the Anschutz Entertainment Group, $550,000 has been provided for a permanent replacement facility for the Child Development Center and Infant Toddler Center.  Associated Students, Inc. and the Infant Toddler Center program will provide additional funds for this project.  Total funding available for this project will be over $1 million.  The project is currently scheduled to go out to bid in late May and is expected to be completed in Fall 2004. The new Center will be located east of the Birchknoll entrance to the campus immediately north of parking lot 1.

Campus Space Renovation                                                                    Completion Date:                          Ongoing

The move into Welch Hall has created the domino effect of space renovation.  Those departments that moved into Welch Hall vacated space throughout the campus.  Although some space is yet to be allocated, a significant amount of the vacated space has been reassigned by the Space Allocation Committee.   A lot of the space that was assigned requires some level of renovation.  As people move into the vacated space and other people move into that space, renovations will be continuing for the next two or three years as funds are available. The website for the Space Allocation Committee is: http://www.csudh.edu/admfin/spacealloc

Velodrome (ADT Event Center)                                                             Completion Date:                       June 2004

A velodrome is being constructed by the Anschutz Entertainment Group along University Drive south of the track and field complex to replace the former outdoor velodrome. This new venue will be the only enclosed velodrome in North America.

The project will construct a 150,800 GSF addition to the existing library that when completed and combined with the existing library space will provide sufficient resource information space to serve 12,000 FTE. The addition will be sited between the existing library and the gymnasium.  The combined project will provide for 83,771 ASF in book stacks area, of which, 16,571 ASF will be in Movable Aisle Compact Storage (MACS).  The combined project will also provide 63,552 ASF in student reader stations, 18,225 ASF in technical processing and public service areas and 2,538 ASF to provide faculty development services in the Center for Teaching and Learning.  The students will be able to enjoy the use of a large number of computer work stations and enhanced seating for their studies and research.  This project is being funded as a result of the successful passage of Proposition 55 in March 2004.  This project has a proposed construction budget of $34,057,000.  Construction could begin in late 2005 and be completed in 2008.

Nature Preserve/Parking Lot                                    Expected Construction Start Date:                      Summer 2004

The Biology Department and the Campus Physical Master Planning Committee have approved a new 6 acre location for a nature preserve along Avalon at the southwest corner of the campus. The relocation of the nature preserve will allow for the construction of a new parking lot, with approximately 900 spaces, on the western portion of the existing nature preserve which is east of the SAC buildings.  An environmental review has been conducted to ensure that appropriate mitigation actions are taken.  The Trustees of the CSU approved the project for construction in March 2004.  The project is expected to be completed in October, 2004.

Exterior Building Signage                                         Expected Start Date:                                              Summer 2004

Based upon the new building signage design, new building signs will be installed on Welch Hall, University Theater, Social and Behavior Sciences and Leo F. Cain Library.  Other existing exterior building signage such as NSM and La Corte Hall will be replaced as funding permits. There has been a lot of confusion regarding the name of the Leo F. Cain Educational Resources Center (ERC) because it is primarily the Library. As part of the signage project, ERC (Leo F. Cain Educational Resources Center) will be identified as the Leo F. Cain Library. The website showing the proposed exterior building signage design is: http://www.csudh.edu/admfin/fp/signage.htm

Additionally, it will include a faculty resource area, 2 seminar rooms and administrative space.

Faculty/Staff Housing Project                                   Very Preliminary Stages

Preliminary work is being conducted to evaluate the interest and viability of constructing Faculty/Staff Housing along University Drive on the east side of the south entrance to the campus.  This area could accommodate approximately 200 living units in a combined design of town homes and detached homes.  Some of the units will be for rent and others will be for sale on leased land.  A project of this nature will be excellent for recruitment and retention.  Several CSU campuses are pursuing similar projects.

Projects completed recently:

Telephones in Classrooms                                                                                                                            Completed

One of the primary concerns that we have had pertaining to communicating information in the event of an emergency is the ability to contact classrooms.  Our current phone system allows us to deliver a voicemail to all telephones on campus but we didn’t have a way to communicate to classrooms without sending someone to each classroom. Some emergencies require people to stay in the classroom and some require that we evacuate. The new telecommunication infrastructure project provides us with the capacity to put telephones in each classroom.  The phone system that has been installed in the classrooms allows faculty to call out to other extensions on the campus and the system has one way announcement capabilities that allow emergency communications to be heard in each classroom.

Telecommunications Infrastructure Project                                                                                                 Completed

This project upgraded critical infrastructure components of the telecommunications system that are essential to support changes in instructional technology that help us meet the need for expanded telecommunications.  The campus telephone switch has been relocated from the ERC basement tunnel to a larger facility on the 1st floor of ERC.  The relocation involved the move of telephone equipment, equipment racks, cables, and the batteries that power our Uninterrupted Power Source (UPS).  All network switches and hubs have been upgraded to Cisco equipment. In addition, the University Internet gateway has also been relocated from the Small College area to the equipment room on the first floor of ERC, which has power backup.

Upgrade Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003                                                                                                    Completed

We have upgraded our email system from Exchange 5.5 to Exchange 2003.  Network Services staff have set up the new hardware for the new email system.  The new Exchange 2003 email server has been installed.  Among the many improvements, the new Exchange 2003 server offers a new web email interface that closely resembles the familiar Outlook.  The new web interface provides remote email users with most of the features that are available in Outlook, such as spell check, University email directory, out-of-office notice, and junk mail filtering.

Food Outlet in Welch Hall                                                                                                                             Completed

In an effort to provide an additional food service venue on campus, the Foundation opened a “grab-and-go” outlet on the first floor of Welch Hall on the south side of the building.  Offerings include:  coffee, pastries, sandwiches, salads, soft drinks and other snacks.  The name of the venue is “Grab ‘n Go Toros.”  Hours of operation are 7:30 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Monday - Thursday; 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday and 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday.  Summer Hours: Monday – Thursday; 8:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. on Friday 8:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and closed on Saturday.

Roof Replacement and Repairs                                                                                                                    Completed

Roofs have been replaced on the Library, Small College Buildings 5, 6, and 9, Central Plant, and sections of the University Theatre.

Gym Floor                                                                                                                                                      Completed

The gymnasium had a new floor installed as a result of the agreement with the Anschutz Entertainment Group.  The project also incorporates a communications network for events that is built into the new floor.

Activity Field South of Gymnasium                                                                                                              Completed

The area south of the gymnasium has been developed as an activity field which incorporates a soccer field.  The new field is being used by the physical education department as well as our athletic teams.  The sidewalk on the east side of the new activity field was also replaced.

Demolition of Old Child Development Center

/Infant Toddler Center                                                                                                                                   Completed

These facilities were demolished because the cost to renovate them for other campus use is prohibitive.  A new and improved facility is scheduled to go out to bid in late May.
