Hazard Control

 

Constant contact with sharp blades and other tools

 

 

Use machine guards, avoid direct contact by using push sticks or other similar devices

Paint and chemical contact

 

Wear proper gloves and eye protection, train for PPE

Potential fume inhalation from paints, cleaners, solvents, and stains

 

 

Work in ventilated areas to minimize and avoid paint, stain, and thinner vapors.  Wear proper respiratory protection if this is not possible.

Improper use of electrical equipment and power tools

 

 

 

Use grounded tools; avoid contact with moving parts of power tools; use proper machine guards where applicable, train Lockout/Tagout and Safework Permitting

Constant heavy lifting and climbing while lifting (up & down)

 

Use proper lifting techniques and ergonomic principles or seek assistance.

Potential exposure to hazardous waste, substances, biohazards, dusts, and fumes

 

 

Wear proper gloves, eye protection, and respiratory protection for fumes and dusts

Improper use of hand tools

 

 

Avoid using tools in situations that may cause pinching or smashing of hands or other body parts due to slipping or other accidents

Potential electrical shock

 

 

Maintenance of energized equipment must be completed by Authorized Individuals utilizing Lockout/Tagout procedures and Safework Permit

Utilization of hand trucks (powered)

 

Train for Forklift/Vehicle (cart) operation

Possible improper construction and use of scaffolding/ladders

 

 

Secure scaffolding to floor using proper bracing and construction principles, have a licensed Professional Engineer check the construction when practical

Potential exposure to loud noise while working in Carpenter Shop

 

Train in proper use of PPE (ear plugs / ear muffs) and participation in the campus’ Hearing Conservation program.

Potential hazards related to Painters or General Labor when painting or general labor is performed
