expected to start construction in September 2003. The new Center will be
located east of the Birchknoll entrance to the campus immediately north of
parking lot 1.
Telecommunications Infrastructure Project Completion Date:
June 2003
Project
This project will upgrade critical infrastructure components of the telecommunications system that are essential to support changes in instructional technology that will help us meet the need for expanded telecommunications. The campus telephone switch has been relocated from the ERC basement tunnel to a larger facility on the 1st floor of ERC. The relocation involved the move of telephone equipment, equipment racks, cables, and the batteries that power our Uninterrupted Power Source (UPS).
We ask for your patience as most offices, classrooms, and labs will be impacted on some level or another (new or upgraded voice and data jacks). The contractor is mobilized in the fenced-in area up on the plateau just east of the new East Academic Complex. There are Building Captains assigned to facilitate user inquiries. The Building Captains attend periodic project meetings and make sure occupants are informed when the contractor is coming into their areas. Most of the new fiber have been installed in the campus tunnel system. We are working on the last phase of the project in the Small College area. The telephone cutover was made for School of Education faculty on May 9. IT staff are working in the NSM building to switch faculty and staff to the new data cables.
TV Studio Upgrade
and Renovation
Project Completion Date: June 2003
This upgrade and renovation of our TV Studio (ERC B112 and
ERC H120) will
1) provide facilities that will meet industry standard acoustical dampening
specifications, thereby allowing our students to learn in a state-of-the-art
studio environment; 2) allow the production of state-of-the-art local studio
programming; 3) allow for the opportunity to establish partnerships with the
Hollywood movie industry and local TV studio production constituents; and 4)
allow for the integration of the new digital video capabilities with digital audio
equipment, thereby providing the necessary required 'mix' of AV equipment and
physical plant (environment).
Campus Space
Renovation
Project Completion Date: June 2004
The move into Welch Hall has created the domino effect of space renovation. Those departments that moved into Welch Hall vacated space all over the campus. Although some space is yet to be allocated, a significant amount of the vacated space has been reassigned by the Space Allocation Committee. A lot of the space that was assigned requires some level of renovation. As people move into the vacated space and other people move into that space, renovations will be continuing for much of the 2003/04 academic year. It is our goal to get space back into operation as quickly as possible with a high priority on classroom space. The website for the Space Allocation Committee is: http://www.csudh.edu/admfin/spacealloc/
Home Depot
Center Project
Completion Date: June 2003
The opening event, which is a track and field invitational, is scheduled for June 1 and the first Galaxy home soccer game is scheduled for June 7. The Home Depot Center has set up a website for this new venue at http://www.homedepotcenter.com/home/default.sps. The Home Depot Center will be installing a new marquee sign on the 405 as well as the 91 freeways. These signs will be similar to the sign next to the 110 freeway for the Staples Center. The signs are expected to be operational before the opening of the venue. Construction on the enclosed velodrome is expected to begin later this calendar year.
Landscape
and Irrigation Improvement
Project Completion Date: June 2003
on the Corner of Avalon and Victoria
This project will repair the irrigation and add new landscaping on the
corner of Avalon and Victoria around the campus monument and marquee.
Projects completed this academic year:
This new building is the first state-funded facility to be
constructed at California State University, Dominguez Hills since the late
1970s. It is a four-story building with
approximately 115,000 assignable square feet that will house the School of
Health, Student Services, the Computer Center, and Administration. The project also includes classroom space to
serve over 1,000 full time equivalent students. The building started
being occupied by January 2003. The
Public Safety area requires some modifications before they will move in on the
first floor. Welch Hall has greatly relieved our significant space issues on campus. We have a website that provides information
about Welch Hall as well as construction progress pictures. http://www.csudh.edu/admfin/FP/ITphotos.htm
Smart (Mediated) Classrooms Project Completion Date: Completed
16 classrooms were renovated to smart (mediated) classrooms during the last academic year. The 16 classrooms are: SBS A-144, SBS B-109, SBS B-115, SBS B-131, SBS B-215, SBS D-125, SBS F-125, SCC 11-305, NSM B-242, NSM B-252, NSM C-221, LCH A-103, LCH A-219, LCH A-224, LCH A-228, and LCH A-324. The following additional classrooms were renovated to smart classrooms during the summer and were available at the beginning of the Fall 2002 semester: SAC 2101, SBS B-143, SBS B-140, SBS E-126, SBS G-126, SAC 1103, SOE 1117, SOE 1216, SBS B110 and NSM C-213/215. All of the smart (mediated) classrooms include a ceiling-mounted projector, projection screen, PC, VCR, a pair of wall-mounted speakers and the central control unit (the podium). The PC is connected to our network and to the Internet. MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Access) is installed on the PCs. The VCR plays VHS videotapes, and the PC reads the standard data and music CDs. All of the features (such as, sound volume, switching from PC to VCR) are controlled on the podium, the central control unit. In addition, there are data and sound connectors on the podium that are designed for the quick connection of a laptop to the “smart” system. This allows those professors who prefer to use their own laptops instead of the built-in PC in the podium to present their class materials.
Video
Surveillance System / Project
Completion Date: Completed
Art Classrooms
In order to address security concerns, a video surveillance system was installed in the art gallery and the art classrooms on the first floor of LaCorte Hall. This system records images in a JPEG format directly to an internal hard drive and can be retrieved in seconds using time/date stamped searches.
Current emergency telephones placed throughout campus did not meet ADA requirements for accessibility and use. Additional issues include: difficult operation due to their configuration, inadequate phone coverage throughout campus areas and sub-par performance. Due to these safety concerns, the campus is replaced existing phones and added seven new phone locations. Of the 36 existing phones, 29 were replaced, including new elevator phones. The remaining locations have been upgraded to the new specification. Both the University Police, and the Office of Risk Management/Environmental Health and Occupational Safety selected the seven locations.
Replace
Asphalt with Concrete
Project Completion Date: Completed
and Add
Lighting West of
Sculpture
Garden
This project replaced the asphalt that was along the west side of the Sculpture Garden with a concrete sidewalk and lighting. The asphalt was a safety issue and the area was very dark.
Restroom
Upgrade – NSM
Project Completion Date: Completed
This project renovated the restrooms on all three floors of the NSM building.
Internet
Café in the Library Project Completion Date: Completed
The Library was provided funding from Associated Students for an Internet Café on the second floor of the Library. The Internet Café is a self-serve center with twelve computer workstations including flat-screen monitors, CD read-write drives, and fast AMD Athelon processors. The purpose of the café is to provide a place for students to relax, casually surf the Web, chat, play games, and check their email. Food and drinks are allowed.
Environmental
Chambers Project Completion Date:
Completed
The environmental chambers in NSM B-154 were relocated to the NSM basement to allow for expanded research space.
Upcoming
Projects:
Telephones
in classrooms Expected Start Date: Summer
2003
One of the primary concerns that we have had pertaining to communicating
information in the event of an emergency is the ability to contact
classrooms. Our current phone system
allows us to deliver a voicemail to all telephones on campus but we don’t have
a way to communicate to classrooms without sending someone to each classroom.
Some emergencies require people to stay in the classroom and some require that
we evacuate. The new telecommunication infrastructure project provides us with
the capacity to put telephones in each classroom. The phone system proposed for the classrooms will allow faculty
to call out to other extensions on the campus and the system will have one way
announcement capabilities that will allow emergency communications to be heard
in each classroom. Our recent review of
our campus emergency plans has indicated that these telephones will be very
valuable in the event of an emergency.
Roof
Replacement and Repairs Expected State Date: July 2003
Plans are being developed to repair/replace, as needed, the roofs on
Small College Buildings 5, 6, and 9, the University Theatre, and Central Plant.
Reclaimed
Water Project Expected Start Date: Summer
2003
With the newly installed main reclaimed water supply lines in place, we
will be converting our existing irrigated areas to reclaimed water. We will also be adding irrigation to areas
that are currently not irrigated such as the area south of the gym.
Demolition
of Old Child Development Center
/Infant
Toddler Center Expected Start
Date: July 2003
The contractor for the Home Depot Center has been using the old child
development center/infant toddler center for construction offices. Once they vacate this facility in July, the
facility will be demolished. The cost
to renovate these facilities for other campus use is prohibitive.
Grading Area South of
Gymnasium Expected
Start Date: Summer 2003
The
area south of the gymnasium will be graded to create a soccer field. This area will be irrigated as part of the
reclaimed water project.
Possible Exterior Public
Address System
Expected Start Date: Unknown
In an effort to improve the
campus’ emergency notification system, RM/EHOS and Information Technology are
exploring the installation of a campus-wide Public Address system. This system would be used for conveying
emergency notices and bulletins to the exterior portions of campus where
students, guests, faculty and staff congregate. This project is dependent on what the cost estimates are.
