Subject: Parking Lot 6 Stenciling--NTC Update

The re-stenciling of parking lot 6 to designate “Faculty/Staff Only” spaces will take place tomorrow (Friday) and/or Saturday.  You may be slightly inconvenienced tomorrow by having to park in the new section of lot 6. New area 100 reserved parking has also been designated with signs in the southeast corner lot 6.  All of lot 6 will be open on Monday morning, August 19.  Also, the curve in the roadway that accesses lot 6 from University Drive has been widened by moving back the curb.  This is near the southeast corner of lot 6.  Also, we have poured a concrete slab in the planter across from the steps the lead up to La Corte Hall.  Pedestrians can now access those steps without having to walk through the planter.  Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Subject: Steam Rising: NTC Update

Some of you have seen what appears to be smoke rising from the area of the new soccer stadium.  After checking with the contractors, I’ve been told that its not smoke but rather steam that is generated from a lime stabilization process used to treat the soil.  The steam is COMPLETELY HARMLESS.  Also, this stabilization process will be finished by noon tomorrow, August 7.  After that, there will be no more steam.  Please contact me if you have any questions or comments.

Subject: Lot 6 Access--NTC Update

Many of you who tried to access Lot 6 from University Drive this morning were blocked by a steamroller that was parked across the new road that leads to Lot 6.  We apologize for this inconvenience.  The roller has now been moved and the green fencing that also blocked access to Lot 6 will be moved within the next hour or so.  By close of business today, you will have the option of leaving Lot 6, proceeding south, and exiting onto University Drive.  The exit leading from Lot 6 north through Lot 3 to Victoria Street remains open.  Again, we apologize for this inconvenience.

Beginning tomorrow Wednesday, June 5, 2002, the second row of faculty/staff parking spaces closest to La Corte Hall in Lot 6 will be temporarily closed-off and converted to Handicap Parking spaces. PLEASE observe the signs, safety cones, caution tape and other construction indicators and DO NOT PARK IN THESE SPACES. The current Handicap Parking spaces along the east edge of Lot 6 will be accessible today and tomorrow until the temporary Handicap Parking spaces are properly marked. Once the temporary Handicap Parking spaces are open, all of the parking spaces along the eastern edge of Lot 6 will be removed to allow for the new roadway.

During this construction phase (now through July 5th), we will maintain a pedestrian access route from Lot 6 to La Corte Hall and other destinations to the east of Lot 6. This access route will move during the construction; please look for the markings and use caution when walking though the work area.

When this phase is complete, there will be a new southern entrance into Lot 6 and a new access road along the east edge of the full lot. If you have additional concerns or questions, please contact me. Thank you.

TEMPORARY ROADS - To begin work on a new, straight road (Toro Center Drive) between the University Drive entrance to the campus and Lot 6, temporary access roads will be developed this week. There will be a temporary gravel road angling north west from Toro Center Drive near parking lot 4. This temporary road will provide access to the current road leading past the tennis courts and on to lot 6. The temporary road will remain until the new, straight Toro Center Drive is completed (end of May 2002).

Another temporary road will be installed connecting the upper and lower sections of lot 4. To access the upper parking lot 4 from University Drive, you will need to enter the lower lot 4 and use the temporary connector road between the upper and lower lots. You will see construction crews completing the utility work in this area and developing the new softball and baseball fields along with the new, straight Toro Center Drive. This work will continue through the end of May 2002.

GRADING - As we reported in earlier messages, the grading work on the western area of the campus began on March 4th and will continue into May 2002. The earth that is "cut" from one area of the campus will be used to "fill" and even-out other areas as part of the grading process. This work started in the north area (closest to Victoria) and will progress from north to south completing with the areas closest to University Drive.

EXCAVATION - The deep excavation of the bowl areas for the soccer and tennis stadia will start the first week of April 2002 and continue for 7 to 8 weeks (to the end of May 2002).

LANE CLOSURE NOTICE - The northbound lanes of Avalon Blvd between University Drive and Victoria Street, will be closed for storm drain connection work.

This work will begin next week (March 25th) and continue for 3 to 4 weeks (through the end of April 2002).

Please contact me with questions or concerns.

Subject:   Expansion work in parking lot 6 - National Sports Training Center project UPDATE

As part of the expansion of lot 6, the north walkway along lot 6 will be removed beginning March 18th. All current parking spaces along the north edge of lot 6 will remain available. Please note that the daily parking ticket dispenser will be removed and relocated. Because this expansion will eliminate the handicap access along the north edge of lot 6, new handicap parking spaces will be installed along the east edge (next to LaCorte Hall) of lot 6. The displaced Area 100 parking spaces will be moved to the south-west corner of lot 6. This relocation will be complete by Monday, March 18th.

The Roller Hockey Rink located on the north west corner of lot 6 will be dismantled and relocated. This work will begin on Monday, March 18th.

You may have noticed that many of the trees that were surrounded the velodrome and the ball fields are now boxed and being relocated for perimeter landscaping at the campus' south west border around the University Heights homes.

REMINDER - The track & field area, the softball field and the baseball field will be closed starting Monday, March 18th. These areas plus the western area of the campus parallel to Avalon Blvd. between Victoria St. and University Drive, are all part of the "construction zone" for the National Sports Training Center project - no access.

NEW - Starting Monday, March 18th through the end of the month a rock crusher will be located west and north of the velodrome site. This piece of construction equipment will crush and grind the velodrome concrete to be reused on the project site.

Please contact me with questions or concerns.

Subject:   North entrance to Lot 6 to be closed - National Sports Training C enter Construction Project UPDATE

As promised, we will keep the campus informed of significant events or disruptions that are anticipated as part of the construction of the National Sports Training Center. Beginning Monday, March 4th, you will see additional chain-link fences and dust screens placed on the north section of the access road to Parking Lot 6. The north entrance to Lot 6 will be closed beginning the week of March 11 through the end of May 2002. Lot 6 will be accessible from the south side of campus (University Drive entrance). Approximately 40 spaces on the far west side (near the Velodrome) of Lot 6 will be unavailable for this phase of the project.

Parking Lot 7 will remain open during this time. This closure will allow the contractors to install major utility conduits needed for the project. Also note that the demolition of the Velodrome will begin next week. This will be a three week effort. Additional details will be communicated as they are available. Please contact me with questions or concerns regarding the construction of this project.

Subject:   National Sports Training Center Construction Project is Underway

As you are aware, we had the groundbreaking ceremony on Tuesday, February 26 for the National Sports Training Center. With an expected opening of the venue in June 2003, the construction will move at a very fast pace. The fencing around the project area is going up now. Parking lot 6 is part of the area being fenced off because at some point in the future each entrance will need to be closed for road work, but not at the same time.  As part of the agreement, the project is building a new parking lot in the dirt area that is between lot 6 and the Extended Education building. This new parking lot will be part of the campus parking inventory in place of parking lot 7. Parking lot 6 will remain open until the replacement lot is completed and it will be closed for a brief period for renovation and re-stripping. It is important to note that there are two major components of this project: one is the main project site and the other is the campus improvement portion. The campus improvement portion includes the replacement of our existing baseball and softball fields and a complete upgrade to our existing track and our multipurpose field.

A more detailed construction schedule is being finalized and is expected to be available in the next 7 to 10 days. We will alert the campus as significant events or disruptions are anticipated. A sound wall will be built immediately west of the Extended Ed Building as a barrier to the noise and dust concerns related to the project. Many of the component parts of the Velodrome are being dismantled this week with the major demolition of the Velodrome expected to start next week. Since there are some improvements being made to some of our campus roadways, there will be times when detours will be necessary. We will communicate these issues to you as soon as we are aware of them. The contractor, PCL, will be working out of the old Child Development Center/Infant Toddler Center.

Stan Hebert will serve as the primary contact for questions or concerns related to the construction of this project. Randy Sharp will serve as Stan's alternate. Their phone numbers and e-mails are:

Stan Hebert (310) 243-3874 shebert@csudh.edu Randy Sharp (310) 243-2163 rsharp@csudh.edu
