to the African Diaspora Sacred Music & Musicians
Program of the CSUDH College of
Arts and Humanities - Music Department!

The CSUDH/CLA Music Department's Program for the Study of African Diaspora Sacred Music and Musicians has as its primary mission

  • the general study of the life and work of African Diaspora musicians in the field of sacred music, with initial focus upon the musicians of Southern California;
  • the special study of the evolution of the Spiritual within the African Diaspora musical repertoire of Southern California; and
  • the collection, preservation and performance of this music, to be housed in the Georgia and Nolan Payton Archive of Sacred Music.

The ongoing research of the Program will form the basis for extensive preservation, performance and curriculum development.
