Toros Crowned NCAA Men's Soccer Champions!

Toros Crowned NCAA Men’s Soccer Champions! Riding an early goal in the 16th minute and its trademark stellar defense, the Toros posted their 14th shutout of the season in a dominating 3-0 win over Dowling University on December 14, to give CSUDH its 2nd NCAA Title in the program’s history and first since 2000.

“This team has come together at the right time, played its best soccer at the end of the season and played to its ultimate potential,” said head coach Joe Flanagan, about the win, and the season.

Patrick Guillen, athletic director, attributed the victory to the team’s “depth and balance.”

The game, which was broadcast to 66 million households on the CBS College Sports Network, was a point of pride for Guillen, who with a CSUDH contingent of approximately 100 fans including President Mildred García, cheered the Toros to victory.

This marks the second NCAA National Title for the Cal State Dominguez Hills men’s soccer program after the Toros won their first over Barry University in 2000, and the third overall NCAA National Title after the 1991 women’s soccer team claimed the first ever NCAA Championship.

BP Presents $50,000 Check to CSUDH to Start New BP Scholarship

Walter Neil, director for public relations for BP Carson Refinery, presented a check in the amount of $50,000 to California State University, Dominguez Hills (CSUDH) to create the BP Scholarship. The donation was made during the College of Business Administration and Public Policy’s annual awards luncheon on Nov. 6, at which BP was honored as Organization of the Year.

“BP believes that investing in Cal State University, Dominguez Hills is money well spent,” Neil said. “It is an investment in this community, an investment in the promising students here, and an investment in the future.”

The $50,000 BP Scholarship will provide five $2,000 scholarships annually over a five-year period to first-time freshman or community college transfer students living in Carson, Long Beach or Wilmington who seek degrees in either chemistry, physics, mathematics, business administration or environmental sciences.

“We are so grateful for this donation to start a new scholarship for our students,” CSUDH President Mildred García said. “BP understands that our institution and students are critical to the local workforce and economy, and this is a great example of the community and business partnerships that we value.”
