On April 8, more than 1,000 students, faculty, staff, and alumni turned out on the North Lawn in front of the Loker Student Union to form the outline of a giant “50,” to celebrate the university’s 50th anniversary and to participate in a special photoshoot. Excellence in Teaching, Research, and Service Honored at Annual Faculty Awards

The 2010 Academic Affairs Faculty Awards Reception took place on March 10 in the Ballroom of the Loker Student Union to honor faculty at California State University, Dominguez Hills for years of service. The evening included three awards for excellence, and in a nod to National Women’s History Month, three female professors were recognized. Dr. Karen Mason, associate professor of psychology, received the Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity Award; Dr. Kate Fawver, associate professor of history, was honored with the Excellence in Service Award; and Dr. Sally Etcheto, professor of music, was given the Lyle E. Gibson Distinguished Teacher Award.

As Fawver accepted her award, she said she was “particularly humbled by my selection.”

“I know that every faculty member nominated in this category as well as many who have received no formal recognition at all would be equally deserving of this award,” said Fawver, who has volunteered her time to rejuvenate the internship program for history students. “Service is what binds the university together. It is how we build programs and design and maintain rigorous and innovative curricula that will transform our students into lifelong learners and prepare them for the challenges they will face as professionals and as citizens.”

Greg Williams: Director of University Archives Pens New Book on History of CSU Dominguez Hills

In honor of the 50th anniversary of California State University, Dominguez Hills, a new book on the history of the campus has been written and compiled by Greg Williams, director of the University Archives and Special Collections. Part of “The Campus History Series” by Arcadia Publishing, the volume contains more than 200 images of the university from its early beginnings as South Bay State College - when it was located in a Rolling Hills Estates bank building - to the Carson campus as it stands today.

In the book, Williams showcases the range of noteworthy visitors to the Carson campus, from Alex Haley, the author of “Roots,” in the 1970s to presidential hopeful Sen. John Kerry on the campaign trail in Los Angeles in 2004. The book also features the birth of a sports program that grew from ping-pong tables at the Watt campus which was located across Victoria Street to include a men’s soccer team that took the NCAA National Championship in 2000 and 2008.

Clarence Gilyard: Actor and Educator Gives Students a Key to the Classics

When Clarence Gilyard (Class of '89, B.A., theatre arts) began working on his undergraduate degree at California State University, Dominguez Hills, he already had several television and film credits to his name, including parts in the series “CHiPS” and the movie “Top Gun.” However, the veteran actor felt that he needed the polish of a college degree after observing fellow students at The Lost Studios in Hollywood.

“While I was there, I realized that a lot of the students had already gone to undergraduate school,” says Gilyard. “I listened to this vocabulary that came out of Shakespeare, Chekov, Ibsen, Tolstoy and Gogol, Sam Shepard, David Mamet, Harold Pinter - all of these writers that I had no idea of. I realized that was the thing that was going to make me sit still in school and get through undergraduate work.”
