Fragile Ceramic Seed Pods by Janice Lloyd Govaerts’ (‘91)

Art Department Alumni Return in 50th Anniversary Alumni Art Exhibition

The “50th Anniversary Alumni Art and Design Exhibition,” an invitational exhibition held in conjunction with the 50th anniversary celebration of the founding of California State University, Dominguez Hills, will feature 75 works of art in varied media by more than two dozen alumni from the art and design departments. The exhibit will open on Wednesday, Sept. 29, and continue through Oct. 27 at the University Art Gallery.

“On the 50th anniversary of CSU Dominguez Hills we are so pleased to present dynamic works of art by alumni artists who live and work in the South Bay/Los Angeles area,” said gallery director Kathy Zimmerer. “Long after graduation our alumni artists continue to create art, maintain studios and exhibit. We are very proud of their work in the art community as K-12 teachers, gallery curators, professors, artists, art historians and arts managers.”

Highlighting the alumni exhibit will be the glowing ceramic plates and brilliant oil pastels of Geoff Guerrero (Class of 1977), the intricate silk screen prints of Matt Jackson (’93), Janice Lloyd Govaerts’ (’91) fragile ceramic seed pods, the vigorous abstractions of H.K. Zamani (’86), a delicate bronze rectangular sculpture by Susan Venable (’81), Class of ’77 alumnus Joe Edward Grant’s luminous paintings of houses, and Class of ’87 alumnus Eric Myles’ strong mixed media drawings and collages of monumental African American figures.

Pete Van Hamersveld: Fight Against Cancer Won at Marathon Finish Line

In December, 2007, Pete Van Hamersveld (Class of ’92, M.A., sociology) was told on his 50th birthday that he had colon cancer. It had been discovered during a routine colonoscopy, and the resulting surgery revealed that the cancer had spread to his lymph nodes. Van Hamersveld had Stage 3C colon cancer, which is one level before a terminal diagnosis. That was in January 2008, and throughout more than a year’s worth of chemotherapy, radiation, and a second surgery, he decided to take on a regimen of physical conditioning that included running—thus entering a race to save his life literally and figuratively.

“When I was going through chemo, I was given a lot of material by the American Cancer Society,” says Van Hamersveld, who is the associate director of Institutional Research, Assessment, and Planning at California State University, Dominguez Hills. “Some of it indicated that you should start exercising when you’re on chemo to help your appetite and keep up some levels of energy, so I started walking a mile everyday. After a few weeks, I got to the point where I could slowly jog that mile and kept improving. It took me six months, but on the morning of my last chemo session, I ran two and a half miles.”

Van Hamersveld’s training was not without its difficulties.

“One of the side effects I developed at the end of six months of chemotherapy was neuropathy in my feet and sometimes I would fall when I was running,” he says. “It got bad enough to prevent me from running for several weeks until I got over that. Later, a different chemotherapy I got during radiation treatments warned against foot damage that could occur from activities like running, so I had to stop again.”

Monika Martinez: Life’s Work is a Sustainable Journey

As Lomita’s assistant city clerk, Monika Martinez (Class of ’00, B.A., public administration) is proud to be part of a local government that has always operated lean enough to ensure that getting through the state’s economic crisis would not be as dire as the circumstances other communities are facing. As a fiber artist whose knitted and felted creations will be featured in the prestigious Contemporary Crafts Market in November, her personal philosophies of green living and sustainable practices are interwoven through both her personal and professional life.

“I’m very much into the green lifestyle,” she says. “When I wash my dishes, I’ll use the [leftover] water to water my garden. For the week, I have two little bags of [actual] waste. It makes me feel good when I know I don’t leave much impact on the environment.”

In her administrative role with the City of Lomita, Martinez also helps the South Bay community economize and use its resources wisely.

“In a small city, there’s so much [to do], you don’t just do one thing,” she says.
