CSU Trustees Appoint Mildred García as President of Cal State Fullerton

Dr. Mildred García

The California State University Board of Trustees has named Mildred García, president of CSU Dominguez Hills, as president of CSU Fullerton, effective after June 1. García, who is the first Latina president in the CSU system, has been CSUDH president since 2007.

“I am extremely honored to be selected as president of another outstanding institution within the California State University, and look forward to working together with the entire CSU Fullerton campus community as we build on its strong foundation,” said García.

García was among the finalists for the position to succeed retired President Milton A. Gordon, who served as CSUF president since 1990. The Board of Trustees will set García’s compensation during its March meeting.

“Dr. García brings unbounded energy, excellent leadership skills and an impressive record of achievement to her new role as president of Cal State Fullerton,” said CSU Trustee Lou Monville, chair of the presidential search committee. “Her student-focused approach, commitment to scholarship and strong administrative experience will be tremendous assets to the campus.

Carmelita Jeter speaks to students, faculty, staff and the Carson community.
Olympic Hopeful Carmelita Jeter Returns to Her Alma Mater

A bit of perspective has helped Carmelita Jeter (Class of ’06, B.A. physical education) find her way to the front of the pack again.

Returning to her alma mater to address a standing-room-only audience as the speaker of the Alumni Spotlight series on Thursday, Feb. 9, Jeter, who in June will participate in the U.S. Olympic Trials in the 100 meter and 200 meter sprints with her eye on competing in the London Summer Olympics this August, discussed how her successes and failures while at CSU Dominguez Hills, and later as a professional athlete, have taught her that it’s not always how fast you run that wins races.

Introducing Jeter at the Alumni Spotlight was her former mentor, CSU Dominguez Hills head track and field coach Warren Edmonson. He recalls a talented runner, but an unfocused one at times. During her first year on campus, Jeter obtained two-time All-American status. When she competed at the Division II championships that year and didn’t win, Edmonson recalled how Jeter stormed off the track and told him she wasn’t going to the victory stand as a runner up.
