Points of Pride
Highlights of campus accomplishments during academic year 2010-2011:
- Video celebrating Cal State University's 50th anniversary features CSUDH alumnus and LA Fire Chief Millage Peaks
- CSUDH’s Model United Nations class was the most highly decorated school at this year’s Model United Nations conference, held in Santa Barbara, Mar 31- April 2. CSUDH’ students participated in five UN committees and won five of the 11 Best Delegates awards. Additionally, Gloria Lopez was selected for the Under Secretary General position for next year’s MUN conference. She will join UN Secretary General Kulani Walker, a CSUDH Political Science graduate, who was chosen for her second term. Our students were praised for their excellent preparation and representation.
- On April 13th, in partnership with American Veterans we hosted our first “Every Day is Veteran’s Day” outreach event, designed to welcome local student veterans to our campus, provide resource information for their successful transition to CSUDH, increase their understanding of their veterans’ educational benefits and share what resources in the community exist for veterans. Feedback from the students who attended was very positive in terms of getting questions answered about educational benefits, information about applying and transferring to CSUDH and how the day provided a great opportunity for them to interact with local veterans in the community.
- The President’s Scholarship Reception was held on Thursday, April 21st on the 5th Floor of the library. I am happy to report that the fundraising for this program was been very successful with more than $190,000 raised to support student scholarships. We will recognize Dr. Eleanor Chang as the 2011 Katherine B. Loker Friend of Education, who honored the passing of her husband, former Accounting Professor Dr. Bear Chang, with the creation of a scholarship in his name for the CBAPP, along with American Honda as the Corporate Partner of the Year Award.
- As one of the final celebrations of the University’s 50th anniversary, Toby Bushee and Doris Ressl organized a “flash mob” public dance performance. Friday at noon on the East Walkway, a large group of students broke out in flash mob style during the Labor, Social and Environmental Justice Fair. An ABC7 television crew was there to capture the moment and aired the story during the channel’s evening news broadcasts.
- There were more than 2,000 attendees for the Labor, Social and Environmental Justice Fair on Friday, April 21st. The fair’s theme “Healthy Jobs for a Healthy Planet” in honor of Earth Day was free and open to the public. There were informational booths and workshops hosted by community groups and a variety of labor organizations. President Mildred García was invited to lead a discussion on “America is in the Heart,” written by Carlos Bulosan.
- University Advancement launched a redesigned and much more comprehensive Dateline Dominguez online news center, publishing more content online to reach a wider audience.
- We are at the end of the 50th anniversary celebration that began in January 2010, and will concluded at the end of May when we will have nearly 200 events. The University Advancement team won a Silver Award in the Year-Long Special Events category from the CASE District VII Awards of Excellence program for the university’s 50th anniversary celebration.
- Earlier this month a delegation from CSUDH along with representatives from other CSU campuses, UC and Community colleges participated in Intersegmental advocacy Day for Higher Education in Sacramento. They conveyed the importance of higher education as an investment in CA that will be key to getting out of the recession.
