The primary purpose of the Child Development Center at California State University, Dominguez Hills is to provide affordable, quality child care and developmental services for the children of university students, faculty and staff. The Center falls under the administration of Associated Students, Inc. and the California Department of Education.

The broad goal of each child is the development of a positive self-concept. Curriculum planning reflects the developmental needs of the individual learner. The program is designed to provide an environment where children explore and engage in prepared learning activities, indoors and outdoors. Appropriate learning alternatives are provided from which children may select activities according to their interest and abilities.

The children at the Child Development Center interact and learn in a family-grouped environment with a team of trained teachers, assistant teachers and volunteers.

Enrollment is limited to children between 2.9 and 10 years of age. Children must be toilet-trained and in good health.

A limited number of families may be eligible for state-subsidized fees. Priority guidelines are set by the California Department of Education and are based on family size and income. Faculty and staff pay full cost. Part-time or full-time care is available with flexible scheduling. Fees vary based on hours of enrollment. Discounts are given if more than one child from a family is enrolled at the Center.

Students may request childcare based on their class schedules and a reasonable amount of study time. Students, who have part-time jobs on campus, may be accommodated during work hours.

A waiting list of interested families is maintained for the purpose of determining priority for new enrollment. It is recommended that interested parents sign up on the waiting list at least one semester in advance of enrollment. The necessary forms can be obtained at the Center during hours of operation (forms cannot be mailed).

Academic Opportunities
As an adjunct facility of the University, the Center serves as an on-campus site for research, fieldwork, observation, participation and other instructional and academically related experiences for university students. All academic work must be requested in writing by the course instructor and approved by the Center Director.

Parent Participation
Parent participation is a very important component of the program. Parents are required to attend meetings at the beginning of each semester. In addition, parents must contribute 10 hours of volunteer time at the Center each semester.

Meals
The CDC participates in the California Department of Education's Child Care Food Program. Children are served nutritious meals that meet the requirements of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Breakfast, lunch and an afternoon snack are provided at no additional cost.
