Complete Box Score

CARSON, Calif.--Cal State Bakersfield captured its first ever California Collegiate Athletic Association Tournament Men's Soccer Championship with a 2-0 upset victory over host Cal State Dominguez Hills Sunday afternoon at Toro Field.

The home loss was the first for the 10th-ranked Toros who see their record drop to 17-3-2, while Cal State Bakersfield improves its record to 15-4-3.

Bakersfield took the lead just five seconds before the half on a counter attack by Nick Angellilo and Jason Ashhurst. Angellilo intercepted a pass near midfield and fed Jason Ashhurst on the right side. Ashhurst dribbled past CSUDH defender Jose Alvarado (San Diego, CA/Chula Vista HS) and fired his shot past Kyle Polak (Huntington Beach, CA/Fountain Valley HS) into the far net, for what turned out to be the game-winner. The Toros came out with a little more intensity in the second half, but just could not find the back of the net.

CCAA Player of the Year Kei Kamara (Lawndale, CA/Leuzinger HS) nearly equalized in the 55th minute, however his header went off the post.

"You never want to take a game, or even a half off," said CSUDH Head Coach Joe Flanagan. "I think we took the first half off. Bakersfield came out with a lot of urgency and it showed. It takes a good 90 minutes to beat a team like that. Whether we're playing for a playoff spot or if we were both 0-20, its a always a nice rivalry match."

Jonas Nilsson gave the 'Runners an insurance goal in the 89th minute, taking a feed from Jason Doss-Carter from the right flank and drilled his shot just inside the near post.

The loss snaps the Toros 18-match unbeaten streak dating back to late August. It also marks the first shutout loss of the season for the CSUDH side.

After winning four consecutive CCAA Championships from 1999-02, Cal State Dominguez Hills has now fallen in the title game the last two seasons in a row at home. The Toros will now await official word from the NCAA selection committee regarding postseason play. The regional pairings will be announced on Monday, with Cal State Dominguez Hills assured of one of three berths. Cal State Bakersfield, Seattle Pacific and UC San Diego are all vying for the third and final playoff spot. The top seed will be Seattle University and will host the regionals beginning on Friday.
