Patrick Guillen Named Athletics Director at Cal State Dominguez Hills Patrick Guillen assumed his position as the Director of Intercollegiate Athletics on November 1, 2005 after serving as the Assistant Athletics Director since 2002, and has led the department to its most successful overall season since its inception in 1968. Guillens tenure at Cal State Dominguez Hills began in August of 1995 as the Director of Athletic Media Relations after coming to the Toros program from Vanguard University (formerly Southern California College) in Costa Mesa, CA. As the Director of Athletics, Guillen secured several new corporate partners including the Carson Doubletree Hotel, updated CSUDHs corporate sponsorship with Enterprise Rent-A-Car, hired CSUDHs new volleyball coach, oversaw the appointment of a new Faculty Athletics Representative, raised necessary funds for new baseball and softball bleachers, sold venue advertising, centralized and updated concessions, and formulated future fundraising ideas all in a period of less than a year, efforts which will substantially increase CSUDH Athletics funding in 2006 and beyond. Additionally, his efforts were instrumental in the 2006 Toros Scholarship Golf Classic which brought in the most scholarship dollars in its 16-year history. Guillen serves on the Board of Directors for the Boys & Girls Club of Carson, as well as on both the CCAA Administrative and CCAA Championship Committees. He is also an active member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the NCAA Division II Athletic Directors Association and, most recently in fall 2006, was named an NCAA Regional Advisory Committee member for womens soccer. In 2005-06 Guillen negotiated the hiring of a Marketing and Promotions Coordinator as well as a Special Projects Coordinator; positions that are vital to the success of the department. The additions were immediately successful with the successful implementation of the Inaugural CSUDH Athletics Business Luncheon held last April, an event which saw more than 20 area businesses represented from the South Bay Community alone. Guillen has been an integral part of an Athletics Department that has captured an NCAA Division II men's soccer national championship, hosted the NCAA Division II Final Four women's soccer championship, and first- and second-round NCAA Division II men's soccer championships. In addition, Guillen initiated the negotiation process that brought the Home Depot Center to the Carson campus three years ago. Beginning with his Assistant Athletics Director/Media Relations responsibilities in 2002, Guillen has been responsible for fundraising, media, community and public relations, as well as the oversight of all home event management operations. Prior to working in intercollegiate athletics, Guillen enjoyed a successful sales and marketing career in the healthcare industry, working as the Area Marketing Manager for what was then the largest privately-owned healthcare organization in the country, Comprehensive Rehabilitation Associates, Inc. Born in nearby Torrance, Guillen's roots are fixed in Carson, having graduated from Carson High School. He earned his undergraduate degree in Business Administration with an emphasis in Management and Marketing from Vanguard University in 1987. Guillen is single and resides in Irvine. |
