CARSON, Calif.-Freshman midfielder Chris
Wimmer's (Fountain Valley HS) goal in the beginning of the second
overtime period gave No. 1-ranked and defending NCAA National
Champion Cal State Dominguez Hills a 3-2 come-from-behind victory
over No. 13 Seattle Pacific University today at Toro Field. The
win extends the Toros nation-best unbeaten streak to 25 games.
For Wimmer he scores his first collegiate goal
in his first collegiate game and it couldn't have come at a better
time. Just 1:08 into the second sudden-victory overtime period,
Wimmer stole a ball that was cleared in front of the mouth of the
goal by a Falcon defender and from 12-yards out booted the ball to
the back of the net for the game-winner.
CSUDH got on the board early with a goal at
3:34 by senior midfielder Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS).
Lockhart took a pass from sophomore midfielder Victor Guerrero
(Century HS) then slotted it to the far post from seven yards out.
The Toros took a 1-0 lead into the break but SPU tied the game at
48:48 on an unassisted goal by Brent Egbert taking a deflection
off a Toros defender and booted the ball to the far post past
goalie Luis Morales (Banning HS).
The Falcons took the lead on a penalty kick
with just over four minutes left in regulation. CSUDH goalkeeper
Luis Morales was called for a foul on a one-on-one situation
setting up the penalty kick which Erik Skipper converted at 85:49.
Two minutes later SPU's Bobby Shefter was called for a handball
inside the penalty box setting up a penalty kick this time for the
Toros. Victor Guerrero sent the game into overtime when he
converted at 88:33.
Today's game was a rematch of sorts. Cal State
Dominguez Hills knocked the Falcons out of the playoffs last year
4-0 in the first round en route to their first-ever National
Championship. In the game today, CSUDH outshot Seattle Pacific
23-7 and 6-0 in the overtime period.
The win extends CSUDH's unbeaten streak to a
nation-best 25 games. The Toros have not lost in nearly a year to
the date, with their last defeat coming on September 2, 2000. The
loss today puts a damper on a solid day by SPU goalie James Ward
who made several highlight saves including three of them alone in
the first overtime period.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 1 in the
preseason NSCAA polls, improves to 3-0 while Seattle Pacific drops
their third consecutive game and is now 1-3. CSUDH is back in
action this Wednesday when they host Cal State Stanislaus in their
CCAA conference opener beginning at 4:00 pm.
