THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Sept. 5 #1 CSUDH vs. CS Stanislaus Toro Field, 4 pm
Sept. 8 #1 CSUDH vs. CS Bakersfield Toro Field, 12:30 pm
LOOKING AHEAD:
The NCAA II defending national champs open up their 2001
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) conference
schedule this week hosting Cal State Stanislaus (9/5) and Cal
State Bakersfield (9/8).
SERIES NOTES:
Last year the Toros defeated CS Stanislaus 5-2 in Turlock then
2-0 in Carson. CSUDH holds a 5-1-0 all-time record against the
Warriors including wins in their last four meetings. The Toros
lone defeat came during the '91 season, a 3-6 setback under then
coach Marine Cano. Against CS Bakersfield, the Roadrunners took
the Toros into overtime in both meetings last year. CSUDH
prevailed 2-1 in double overtime in Bakersfield then won 3-2 in
Carson in the final regular season game which closed out a perfect
14-0-0 CCAA record. All-time, the Toros own a 23-11-4 record and
have won their last seven meetings against the 'Runners dating
back to Oct. 11, 1997. During that span, CSUDH has outscored CSUB
17-6.
LOOKING BACK:
Last week the Toros defeated Western Washington (1-0) on
Wednesday then Seattle Pacific (3-2 ot) in dramatic fashion on
Saturday. Against WWU, sophomore midfielder Eddie Gonzales-Pinto
(N. Torrance HS) booted in the game-winning goal for the second
time in as many games. Pinto's goal came in the 14-minute mark,
scoring on a scramble in front of the goal off of a corner kick to
account for all the scoring the Toros defense would need. In the
game CSUDH outshot the Vikings 14-10 including an 8-1 margin in
the first half. Senior goalie Luis Morales (Banning HS) earned his
first shutout of the year. Against Seattle Pacific the Falcons had
revenge on their mind after the Toros eliminated them in the first
round of the NCAA playoffs last year (4-0) in Carson. SPU almost
got it after going ahead 2-1 on a penalty kick with just over four
minutes remaining in the game. However, a Falcon defender was
called for a handball inside the penalty box setting up a penalty
kick for the Toros with just over one minute left in regulation.
Sophomore midfielder Victor Guerrero (Century HS) converted the
shot sending the match into overtime. After a scoreless first
overtime where CSUDH outshot the Falcons 6-0, freshman midfielder
Chris Wimmer (Fountain Valley HS) made SPU pay collecting a
cleared ball from 12-yards out and found the back of the net for
the game-winner.
SCOUTING THE WARRIORS:
Cal State Stanislaus comes in with a 0-3 record after losing
in overtime to Dominican College last Sunday 2-1. The Warriors
lost to College of Notre Dame (CA) 2-1 in their first game, then
were shutout against NCAA I school University of San Francisco
4-0. The school has managed only one goal this year and that
belongs to Francisco Benito. They have been outscored 23-2 thus
far. Matthew Buckman has compiled a 2.43 GAA in goal so far.
BEEP...BEEP!:
Coming into the week, Cal State Bakersfield is a surprising
2-2 overall after being picked by the CCAA conference coaches to
win the league championship along with CSUDH in a preseason poll.
The 'Runners are coming off a 2-1 loss against NAIA No. 17-ranked
Simon Fraser last Saturday. Their other loss came at the feet of
another NAIA school in The Master's College 1-0. CSUB's wins came
against NAIA Fresno Pacific (2-0) and Humboldt State (2-1). A lack
of offense has been CS Bakersfield's achille's heel with only five
goals in four games, three of those on penalty kicks. Bakersfield
is led by Fabian Sandoval with six points on three goals, all
penalty kicks. Michael Perreira leads the team in goal with a 1.67
GAA allowing five goals in four games.
TOROS ATOP PRESEASON POLLS:
CSUDH begins the 2001 season ranked No. 1 in the NSCAA
preseason polls. The Toros have not relinquished the top spot in
the nation since they climbed to the top of the polls on October
8, 2000.
WIMMER TALLIES WINNER:
Freshman midfielder Chris Wimmer (Fountain Valley HS) picked a
great time to tally his first collegiate goal. After sitting out
the first two games, Wimmer earned his first start of the year
seeing his first action against Seattle Pacific. In the second
overtime period, Wimmer stole a cleared ball from 12-yards out and
first-timed the ball to the back of the net propelling the Toros
to a dramatic comeback win over the Falcons.
FLANAGAN ON TOP:
After Saturday's 4-1 season opening win over Vanguard, coach
Flanagan is now the all-time winningest CSUDH coach with 86 career
wins. He was tied with current UC Irvine coach and former Toros
mentor Marine Cano (83-72-17). It only took Flanagan 7 seasons
plus one game to take over the top spot while Cano's 83 victories
took 9 years to compile on the Carson campus.
WHO'S COUNTING?:
The Toros have opened up the season with three wins and now
own a nation-best 25-game unbeaten streak dating back to over a
year ago when CSUDH lost 1-0 to The Master's College.
THE STREAK GOES ON:
Goalie Luis Morales continues his unblemished Win-Loss record
in a Toros uniform. With Saturday's win, Morales is now 14-0
overall after going 11-0 last season. Morales now ranks 7th
all-time in the career wins column.
HOMESTAND ENDS:
The Toros will close out their season-beginning 5-game
homestand after they host CS Stanislaus and CS Bakersfield this
week. The team will then play six of their next eight contests on
the road.
I'LL HAVE A SHOT:
CSUDH has outshot their opponents 65-28 in their first three
games while outscoring them 21-7. Of the 65 shots 22 of them, or
34%, have been on frame. Leading the group is senior Sean Lockhart
with 16 shots
