THIS WEEK IN TOROS CROSS COUNTRY
Sept.8 UC Irvine Invitational Huntington Beach, CA
WOMEN OFF TO UC IRVINE INVITATIONAL NEXT
WEEKEND
The Cal State Dominguez Hills women's cross country team will
gear up for their second meet of the 2001 season as they travel to
Huntington Beach to take part in the UC Irvine Invitational, at
Central Park in Huntington Beach.
HEAD COACH DEANN SCHLOBOHM
Coach Schlobohm begins her fifth season as head coach of the
CS Dominguez Hills Cross-Country team. Last season, the Toros
finished seventh in the CCAA and took an eleventh place finish at
the NCAA Division II Regional Championships. Scholbohm started the
Toros Cross Country program from scratch in 1997.
TOROS OPEN SEASON IN JAMMIN STYLE
The Cal State Dominguez Hills cross country team took to the
5,000 m course this weekend at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin'
Invitational at Carbon Canyon Park in Brea. The Toros finished
tenth on the meet, the highest finish by a Division II squad. The
only non Division I team to beat the Toros out was NAIA squad
Biola that took a sixth place finish. Stanford took the win,
followed by UCLA, UCSB, USC, CS Fullerton, Biola, UC Riverside,
San Diego State, Pepperdine, CSUDH, Loyola Marymount, Cal Poly
Pomona, Vanguard University, CS San Bernardino and Chapman rounded
out the pool.
D'AMICO LEADS THE SQUAD, LOOKS TO HAVE
STRONG SEASON
In the beginning of her senior season with the Toros, Cambria
D'Amico (North Torrance HS) has stepped up to lead the squad. At
the CSF Jammin' Invitational this past weekend, D'Amico led the
Toros with a 36th place finish at a time of 19:14.8. She beat out
runners from top DI programs in USC and UCSB. If her performance
at this meet is any indication of how this upcoming season will be
for D'Amico, she is in good shape. Her time last weekend was
better than in at least four meets in the 2000 season.
FOSLING FINDS THE FINISH LINE
Not only did Pia Fosling (Bornholms Amt Gymnasium) compete in
her first collegiate cross country meet on Saturday. She also ran
in her first meet in collegiate meet in America. Fosling, a
freshman from Roenne, Denmark, is the first international runner
to compete for the Toros in cross-country since the program began
in 1997. Fosling was the third Toro to cross the finish line with
a time of 20:31.3.
D'AMICO EARNS CONFERENCE HONORS
After posting a time of 19:48.8 in the 5, 000 m this past
weekend at the Cal State Fullerton Jammin' in Brea, Cambria
D'Amico was named CCAA Runner of the Week. The Torrance native,
helped guide the Toros to a tenth place finish, the top finish for
a Division II school at the meet. This is the first time in her
career that the senior has recieved Runner of the Week accolades.
