CARSON, Calif.-Freshman forward Michael Jimenez
(Bishop Montgomery HS) scored his first collegiate goals, two of
them, to lead the No. 1-ranked Toros and defending national
champions to a 5-0 win over Cal State Stanislaus today at Toro
Field. Today's game marked the 2001 California Collegiate Athletic
Association season opener for both teams. The win also extends the
Toros nation-best unbeaten streak to 26 games.
Junior forward Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS)
started it all knocking in the first Toros goal at 23:03. Valencia
took a nice pass over the Warrior defense from sophomore
midfielder Victor Guerrero (Century HS) and tapped the ball to the
far post for a 1-0 lead.
CSUDH then scored four more unanswered goals in
the second half beginning with senior midfielder Sean Lockhart
(Palm Springs HS). Senior defender Kyle Thornton (W. Torrance HS)
set the scoring opportunity up nicely when he sent a long ball to
the corner to Guerrero who then crossed a pass to Lockhart for the
score at 63:28.
Eight minutes later, Isidro Torres (Millikan
HS) set up the next goal when he sent a ball to Guerrero near the
mouth of the goal. Guerrero then fed freshman midfielder Rick Cobb
(Warren HS) who beat the Warrior keeper Matt Buckman to the far
post making it 3-0 at the 71:36 minute mark. Michael Jimenez then
struck for his first ever collegiate score at 80:35.
Senior defender Nathan Ballard (Sonora HS) sent
a ball inside the box to Steve Camp (Del Oro HS) who's shot was
deflected. Jimenez cleaned up the action finding the back of the
net to the near post giving the Toros a commanding 4-0 lead.
Jimenez then scored his second goal of the game eight minutes
later, when at 88:05 sophomore midfielder Matt Hellman (Frazier
Mtn. HS) was on a breakaway. Hellman then passed off to Jimenez
from 10-yards away who slotted the ball past the goalie for the
final scoring margin.
Senior goalie Luis Morales (Banning HS) earns
his second shutout of the year while having to make only two saves
on the day. For Morales, it is his 15th consecutive win in a CSUDH
uniform dating back to last season, and has yet to taste defeat
with a perfect 15-0-0 career record. For CSU Stanislaus, Matt
Buckman suffers the loss while making five saves in the net today.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 1 in the
first NSCAA regular season polls released earlier this week,
improve to 4-0 and 1-0 in conference while Cal State Stanislaus
drops to 0-4 and 0-1 in league action.
CSUDH is back in action this Saturday when they
host Cal State Bakersfield in another CCAA conference match-up.
First kick is scheduled for 12:30 pm.
