Top Ranked Toros Cruise to 6-3 Victory over Cal State LA
September 12, 2001

LOS ANGELES, Calif. - The Toros received six goals from six different players, cruising to a 6-3 California Collegiate Athletic Association road win over Cal State LA today at Jesse Owens Stadium.

Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (N. Torrance HS) struck first early for CSUDH just over a minute into the contest. Senior All-America defender Joe Cartlidge (Redondo Union HS) played a perfect ball from near midfield over the CSLA defense where Gonzales-Pinto took the ball and tapped it to the near post for a 1-0 lead.

Three minutes later, Victor Guerrero (Century HS) took a Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS) corner kick and headed it into the near post for a 2-0 Toros lead.

Nikos Gutrugianios cut the CSUDH lead to 2-1 when he converted a penalty kick in the 25th minute of play. A Golden Eagle own goal in the 30th minute gave the Toros 3-1 lead then junior Steve Camp (Del Oro HS) gave CSUDH some breathing room when he scored just minutes before halftime taking a nice Sean Silveri pass and knocked the ball to the far post making it 4-1.

Isidro Torres (Millikan HS) put the team up 5-1 when he took a header pass from Cartlidge off a Lockhart corner kick and tapped the ball to the back of the net from close range for his second goal of the year.

Cal State LA scored two goals, in the 61st and 77th minute, to cut the game to 5-3. Their second goal came shorthanded after Robert Navarro was sent off the field with a red card at the 70:30-minute mark. Toros forward Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) accounted for the final margin when at 84:03 he took a Scott White (Sonora HS) pass in front of the mouth of the goal and knocked it to the near post for the final 6-3 margin.

CSUDH controlled most of the game, outshooting the Golden Eagles 25-15 in the game. The Toros, ranked No. 1 in the latest NSCAA national polls, extend their winning streak to 19 games and their unbeaten streak to 28 games dating back to last season. They are now 6-0 overall and 3-0 in conference action. Cal State LA drops to 5-2 overall and 2-1 in league play.

The Toros are back in action on Friday hosting Cal Poly Pomona. First kick is scheduled for 4:00 pm.
