CARSON, Calif.-Cal State Dominguez Hills and
Cal Poly Pomona battled to a 1-1 double overtime tie in a
California Collegiate Athletic Association contest today at Toro
Field.
Pomona got on the board early when at 11:29
Lisa Araujo took a clearing attempt from CSUDH's Sanoe Samatua (N.
Torrance HS) off of a corner kick and headed a shot to the near
post past goalie Heather Williams (Canyon HS), who was drawn out
off her line making it 1-0.
That was all the scoring until the 78th minute
when Samatua tallied the equalizer. Samatua gathered the ball from
15-yards away on the left flank, and with her left foot chipped
the ball to the far post past Bronco goalie Katie Kreps.
Both defenses staved off furious rallies to
send it into overtime. CSUDH's best chance to take the lead in
regulation came from forward Tanya Wilson (Palm Springs HS) who
hit a shot from 25-yards out, but the ball hit the top of the post
and went over the net.
Again, both defenses held each other scoreless
resulting in the draw. CSUDH did hit the post twice in one
possession, but the ball was finally cleared by a Pomona defender
saving the game. The Broncos outshot the Toros 17-15 in the game
but Williams tied a career-high with 9 saves in goal.
CSUDH (7-0-1, 3-0-1 CCAA), who came into the
game ranked No. 8 in the latest NSCAA polls, returns to action
Sunday, Sept. 16 when it hosts Cal State San Bernardino. Cal Poly
Pomona (3-1-1, 1-1-1) travels to Cal State Los Angeles this
Sunday.
