2001 Results 2001 Roster

THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Sept. 21 #1 CSUDH @ UC San Diego Triton Stadium, 7 pm
Sept. 24 #1 CSUDH @ Grand Canyon The Meadow, 7:30 pm

LOOKING AHEAD:
The NCAA II defending national champs begin a five-game road trip with a game this week at UC San Diego on Friday. The team then travels to the Valley of the Sun in Phoenix, AZ to take on Grand Canyon University.

SERIES NOTES:
Last year, CSUDH defeated UC San Diego in Carson 3-0. That game was the first all-time meeting between the schools. Against Grand Canyon, CSUDH holds an 11-7-2 series advantage. Last year, the Toros swept the Antelopes winning 2-0 in their regular season contest, then 5-0 in the first round of the CCAA playoffs.

A LOOK BACK:
Last week the Toros continued their torrid run to begin the 2001 season with a 5-2 victory over visiting Cal Poly Pomona, and a 2-0 shutout over CS San Bernardino on Sunday.

Against Pomona, junior forward Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) knocked in two goals, including the game winner, marking the 19th straight victory for the Toros dating back to last season. Valencia struck early when at 3:52 he took a pass from Sean Silveri (Valencia HS) and beat the Bronco goalie to the far post for a 1-0 Toros lead. Senior Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS) made it 2-0 when he took a pass from Victor Guerrero (Century HS) over the defense and knocked his shot to the near post at the 16:49-minute mark. Cal Poly Pomona cut the lead to 2-1 three minutes later at 19:37, but less than a minute later, Valencia scored his second goal of the game on a breakaway. Valencia beat the keeper and toed the ball for a 3-1 lead at 20:32. Freshman Rick Cobb (Warren HS) gave the Toros a 4-1 lead at 32:52 taking a rebound off the post from a Lockhart shot and one-timed the ball to the far post. Pomona cut the Toros lead in half once again scoring with just four minutes remaining in the first half making it 4-2. Siveri accounted for the final score two minutes into the second period when he sent a blast to the upper corner of the far post from 25-yards away at 47:17. Senior fullback Nathan Ballard (Sonora HS) assisted with a nice pass from the left side. In the game, CSUDH outshot Pomona 18-7 including a 10-2 margin in the first half. Goalkeeper Luis Morales (Banning HS) made three saves to earn the win.

On Sunday in the 2-0 win against San Bernardino, Valencia knocked in his second game-winning goal in as many games, to lead CSUDH to the victory. The game was scoreless until the 28:48-minute mark when Valencia took a Scott White (Sonora HS) pass and chipped his shot over the CSUSB goalkeeper, who was off his line, from 20-yards out giving the Toros a 1-0 lead. Lockhart gave CSUDH a 2-0 lead when he registered his sixth goal of the year. At the 59:41-minute mark, Lockhart collected a loose ball from the left flank and curled in a line drive shot to the upper far post from 20-yards out, just past the outstretched arms of the Coyote goalie. The Toros defense clamped down and held off a couple Coyote scoring chances down the stretch. Morales earned the shutout with two saves in the game for the Toros. He is now 8-0 on the season and 19-0-0 in a CSUDH uniform. In the game, CS Dominguez Hills outshot CSUSB 9-3.

MIRACULOUS MORALES:
Toros goalie Luis Morales is on a roll to say the least. The 5-9 senior from nearby Banning HS has yet to taste defeat since donning a CSUDH uniform last year. In 2000, Morales compiled a perfect 11-0-0 record and this year he remains perfect with an 8-0-0 mark to begin the season. He is now 19-0-0 during his brief tenure, the longest such streak in NCAA Division II.

SCOUTING THE TRITONS:
UC San Diego enters the week with a 1-6 overall record and a 1-4 mark in conference play. They are coming off a 1-0 losses at San Francisco State and Sonoma State. Ali Managhebi leads the Triton attack with 8 points on 3 goals and 2 assists. Kris Chiles has scored 4 points with 2 goals. Ryan Weirich has been seeing most of the time in goal. He has compiled a 2.03 goals against average allowing 8 goals in 4 games. Nick Tarantino has played half the amount of time in the net compiling a 1.88 GAA allowing 4 goals in 3 games played.

LOCKNESS SIGHTING:
Midfielder Sean Lockhart has picked up right where he left off last year. The 5-9 senior from Palm Springs HS now leads the team with 16 points on a team-best 6 goals and 4 assists. During the 2000 championship season, Lockhart was second on the squad in scoring tallying 29 points. He has now scored in every game except the season opener against Vanguard.

PROVIDING ASSISTANCE:
In just 33 career games at CSUDH, Lockhart has tied the Toros all-time career record for assists. His next assist will give him 20 in his career braking the 11-yard old mark set by Martin Mira (1987-90). Last year, Lockhart broke the all-time record for assists in a season with 15. The old mark was 13 held by Mike Tiiman (1983).

GABRIEL GETS GOING:
Forward Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS), after a slow start to the season, is now on fire offensively. Valencia has scored four goals in the past four games and has scored 11 points in the past five games. The 5-9 junior is now second on the team in scoring with 11 points on 5 goals and 1 assist. He leads the team with 17 shots on frame and 3 game-winning goals.

TOROS STILL ON TOP:
CSUDH has been on top of the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) national polls since October 8, 2000. The Toros began the 2001 season as the preseason #1 ranked team, and have remained on top with their 8-0-0 start to the campaign. New NSCAA polls will not be released until Monday, Sept. 24 due to this past week's tragic events.

ROAD WARRIORS:
After opening up the 2001 campaign with seven of their first eight games at home, the Toros will now get a strong taste of the road as they embark on a five-game roadtrip beginning this Friday at UC San Diego. The team returns home on Friday, Oct. 12 to take on UC Davis.
