PHOENIX, Az.--The Cal State Dominguez Hills
women's soccer team put a stop to their two-game losing streak
with a 3-0 CCAA win over Grand Canyon University tonight in the
Valley of the Sun.
Sophomore forward Tanya Wilson (Palm Springs
HS) registered the game-winner early in the 7th minute. The Toros
defense led by senior goalie Heather Williams (Canyon HS) made it
stand up as the program improves their all-time series record over
the Antelopes to 10-0 dating back to 1996.
At the 7:38-minute mark, sophomore defender
Leslie Taylor (Ayala HS) played a ball over the top of the GCU
defense, finding the feet of Wilson who beat goalie Jolene Gannon
and slipped the ball into the net from 15-yards away.
The Toros took a 2-0 advantage at the 57:03
minute mark when Lecia Davis (N. Torrance HS) played a ball into
forward Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) who found the far post from
18-yards out.
After Garza failed on a penalty kick in the
65th minute, Maribel Garcia (Woodbridge HS) registered her first
collegiate goal in a Toros uniform. At the 77:39 mark, Garcia
collected a rebound off the keeper from consecutive shots by
Garza, then chipped her shot to the upper far post giving the
Toros a 3-0 advantage and the final margin of victory.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 25
nationally in the latest NSCAA polls, out-shot Grand Canyon 24-9.
Heather Williams earns her second shutout of the season making two
saves in the game. CSUDH improves their overall record to 8-2-1
and 4-2-1 in CCAA play. The Toros will be back in action Friday at
home taking on non-conference foe Cal Baptist University at 4:30
p.m.
