ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--Senior defender Joe
Cartlidge (Redondo Union HS) led the No. 3-ranked Toros to a 2-0
shutout victory over Sonoma State in California Collegiate
Athletic Association action in Rohnert Park, CA.
Cartlidge scored his first goal of the season
and the game-winner in the 26th minute off a corner kick from
senior midfielder Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS). Lockhart sent a
ball in that Cartlidge headed into the back of the net after
beating his defender in the air.
After the Toros took a 1-0 lead into the break,
they added an insurance goal in the 83rd minute when junior
forward Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) beat the Cossack goalie
one-on-one knocking in the goal from 10-yards out. Sophomore
midfielder was credited with the assist sending the ball over the
top and catching the SSU defense flat on the play. Valencia did
the rest to finish the scoring on the day.
Today's game was a hard-fought defensive battle
in the trenches that the Toros were fortunate to win. It took a
solid effort from goalie Luis Morales (Banning HS) and the rest of
the CSUDH defense to gain the all important CCAA win on the road.
The Toros were out-shot for the first time on the year with the
Cossacks holding a 10-5 edge.
CSUDH is now 11-1-1 overall and 8-0-1 in
conference play. The Toros completed a season-long 5-game road
trip today with a solid 3-1-1 record. The squad returns home on
Friday, October 12 to take on CCAA rival UC Davis. Kick-off is
scheduled for 3:00 p.m. at Toro Field.
