Women's Soccer Upends Sonoma State 2-1 in Overtime
October 7, 2001

ROHNERT PARK, Calif.--Senior forward Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) knocked in the Golden Goal for the Toros as Cal State Dominguez Hills defeated conference rival Sonoma State 2-1 in overtime today in CCAA action.

Tanya Wilson (Palm Springs HS) gave the Toros a 1-0 lead early at the 3:31-minute mark. Junior Shannon Donnelly (LB Poly HS) played a long throw-in from Sanoe Samatua (N. Torrance HS) and flicked her pass to Wilson in front of the mouth of the goal. Wilson finished with a nice shot to the far post.

CSUDH's lead was short-lived, however, as Sonoma's Amy Sanford tied the game eight minutes later at 11:47 making it 1-1. Both defenses would hold the opposition scoreless the rest of the way to send the contest into overtime.

It was during the first 15-minute overtime period that Garza struck gold. CSUDH freshman Kristen Walsh (Mayfair HS) stole a pass on the Toros half of the field and played Donnelly at midfield. Donnelly sent a long diagonal pass to the left side over the defense finding Garza's feet. SSU's goalie was caught in-between as Garza sent the ball to the near post from 18-yards away giving the Toros a 2-1 sudden-victory win.

Senior goalie Heather Williams (Canyon HS) earned the win in goal with six saves. CSUDH out-shot the Cossacks 14-12 in the game. With the victory, the Toros are now on a 4-game win streak including winning their last three CCAA contests. The team is now 11-2-1 overall and atop the CCAA Central Division standings with a 6-2-1 record.

The Toros, ranked No. 19 in the latest NSCAA polls, will be back in action on Friday, October 12 hosting the Aggies of UC Davis. Kick-off is set for 12:30 p.m.
