THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Oct. 12 #3 CSUDH vs. UC Davis Toro Field, 3 pm
Oct. 14 #3 CSUDH vs. Chico State Toro Field, 12:30 pm
LOOKING AHEAD: The NCAA II defending
national champs, coming off their longest road trip of the year,
will play at the friendly confines of Toro Field this weekend,
hosting CCAA foes UC Davis and Chico State.
SERIES NOTES: This week's match-up
against UC Davis is the 7th all-time meeting with the Toros
holding a 4-2 series advantage. Last year CSUDH defeated the Ags
3-1 in Davis, CA. Against Chico State, the Toros and the Wildcats
have also met six previous times with CSUDH holding an identical
4-2 series edge. Last season, the Toros handed Chico a 4-1 loss up
North.
A LOOK BACK...
TOROS FEEL BITE OF GATORS, TIE SFSU 3-3:
Cal State Dominguez Hills was unable to hold on to a 3-2 lead with
less than four minutes left in regulation, as San Francisco State
and the Toros battled to a 3-3 double overtime draw in CCAA
action. CSUDH, having had their 32-game unbeaten streak and
23-game win streak snapped on Sept. 28, was looking to begin
another streak against San Francisco State. After a scoreless
first half, senior midfielder Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS) got
the Toros on the board first scoring at the 45:23-minute mark off
an assist from Rick Cobb (Warren HS). SFSU tied the game 23
minutes later before sophomore midfielder Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (N.
Torrance HS) would give CSUDH the lead again at 75:28 off an
assist from Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS). But the Toros would
see the Gators nip at the lead again, equalizing the contest at
the 78:25-minute mark. CSUDH went ahead again 3-2 with less than
five minutes remaining in the game. Cobb assisted on his second
score when he fed Valencia at 85:23. However, the Toros couldn't
hang on as SFSU tied it down the stretch. Both defenses were able
to shutout the opposition in both extra periods battling to a
hard-fought tie. San Francisco State out-shot the Toros in the
game 26-24 in handing the Toros their first blemish in CCAA play
since Oct. 26, 1999.
TOROS TOPPLE COSSACKS: Senior defender
Joe Cartlidge (Redondo Union HS) led the No. 3-ranked Toros to a
2-0 shutout victory over Sonoma State in CCAA action in Rohnert
Park. Cartlidge scored his first goal of the season and the
game-winner in the 26th minute off a corner kick from senior
midfielder Sean Lockhart. Lockhart sent a ball in that Cartlidge
headed into the back of the net after beating his defender in the
air. After the Toros took a 1-0 lead into the break, they added an
insurance goal in the 83rd minute when junior forward Gabriel
Valencia beat the Cossack goalie one-on-one knocking in the goal
from 10-yards out. Sophomore midfielder was credited with the
assist sending the ball over the top and catching the SSU defense
flat on the play. Valencia did the rest to finish the scoring on
the day. The game was a hard-fought defensive battle in the
trenches that the Toros were fortunate to win. It took a solid
effort from goalie Luis Morales (Banning HS) and the rest of the
CSUDH defense to gain the all important CCAA win on the road.
LOCKHART LOCKED & LOADED: Sean
Lockhart has been the offensive catalyst behind the Toros 11-1-1
start this year. The senior midfielder leads the squad with 24
points on nine goals and six assists. He also has a team-high
three game-winning goals. Over the weekend, Lockhart scored a goal
and assisted on the game-deciding goal against Sonoma State.
Already this season, Lockhart has become the all-time leader with
21 career assists and currently ranks sixth all-time with 53
career points.
OTHER LEADERS: CSUDH has four players
scoring in double figures. Behind Lockhart are Gabriel Valencia
(17 points/7g, 3a), Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (12 points/5g, 2a) and
freshman midfielder Rick Cobb (10 points/4g, 2a). Sophomore
midfielder Victor Guerrero (Century HS) has recorded nine points
(2g, 5a) while junior forward Scott White (Sonora HS) has tallied
eight points (1g, 6a) on the year.
MORALES MAGNIFICENT: Goalkeeper Luis
Morales has been brilliant this year. The senior has recorded an
11-1-1 record and a 1.02 goals against average in the net. Morales
needs only one more shutout to tie the Toros all-time mark for
shutouts in a season. He currently has six on the year. His next
will tie him with Steve Martin (1982) and Chris Wilson (1988).
KINGS OF THE ROAD: CSUDH completed
their season-long 5-game road swing with a solid 3-1-1 record. Of
course during this swing came their first loss in over a year,
however, the squad has since begun a new streak with a tie and a
win over the weekend.
CORNER KICKS: The Toros statistical
assault on the year continues. The team has outscored their
opponents 112-36 including a 38-14 goal advantage. In the second
period alone, CSUDH holds a 22-8 goal advantage. In three overtime
games, the Toros have outshot the opposition 24-6 in the extra
periods. The team is averaging 2.9 goals per game while allowing
only 1.1.
TOROS REMAIN IN TOP THREE: The Toros
kept the No. 3 spot in the latest NSCAA polls this week. CSUDH
dropped out of the top spot for the first time in nearly a year
after their loss to Alliant University on Sept. 28.
