THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Oct 12 #13 CSUDH vs. UC Davis Toro Field, 12:30 pm
Oct. 14 #13 CSUDH vs. Chico State Toro Field, 3 pm
ON TAP: CSUDH returns from their
Northern California trip to host two Northern California teams in
UC Davis and Chico State on Friday and Sunday.
TOROS TAKE BITE OUT OF GATORS 2-0: Cal
State Dominguez Hills won its third consecutive game with a 2-0
shutout over San Francisco State last Friday in San Francisco. The
Toros took an early 1-0 lead at 11:27 when Tanya Wilson (Palm
Springs HS) pressured the Gator goalie to misplay the ball to the
right flank. CSUDH freshman midfielder Kristen Walsh (Mayfair HS)
was there to cross her pass into the box to forward Shannon
Donnelly (LB Poly HS) who volleyed her shot into the back of the
net for the game-winner. Cal State Dominguez Hills made it 2-0 off
a penalty kick from Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) to give them
breathing room. Garza was pulled down inside the box on a
breakaway to set up her 11th goal of the year. CSUDH out-shot SFSU
21-12. Senior Toros goalie Heather Williams (Canyon HS) earned her
sixth win and third shutout of the year with five saves today in
goal.
TOROS RUN PAST ANTELOPES IN PHOENIX:
Dianne Garza knocked in the Golden Goal for the Toros as Cal State
Dominguez Hills defeated conference rival Sonoma State 2-1 in
overtime today in CCAA action. Tanya Wilson gave the Toros a 1-0
lead early at the 3:31-minute mark. Junior Shannon Donnelly played
a long throw-in from Sanoe Samatua (N. Torrance HS) and flicked
her pass to Wilson in front of the mouth of the goal. Wilson
finished with a nice shot to the far post. CSUDH's lead was
short-lived, however, as Sonoma's Amy Sanford tied the game eight
minutes later at 11:47 making it 1-1. Both defenses would hold the
opposition scoreless the rest of the way to send the contest into
overtime. It was during the first 15-minute overtime period that
Garza struck gold. CSUDH freshman Kristen Walsh stole a pass on
the Toros half of the field and played Donnelly at midfield.
Donnelly sent a long diagonal pass to the left side over the
defense finding Garza's feet. SSU's goalie was caught in-between
as Garza sent the ball to the near post from 18-yards away giving
the Toros a 2-1 sudden-victory win. Goalie Heather Williams earned
the win in goal with six saves. CSUDH out-shot the Cossacks 14-12
in the game.
SERIES NOTES VERSUS AGS AND 'CATS: Friday's
match-up against UC Davis marks the 15th meeting all-time between
the Aggies and the Toros. The series is even at 7-7 with CSUDH
winners of the previous two meetings. The Toros defeated UCD 1-0
in Davis last year on a rare game-winning goal by Jenae Veal.
Against Chico State, CSUDH holds an 8-1 series advantage over the
Wildcats. Chico defeated the Toros in their first-ever meeting
during CSUDH's second season of competition in 1985. The Toros
have won the last eight contests including a 4-0 shutout in Chico
last year.
TOROS CONTINUE CLIMB, NOW RANKED #13:
The Toros moved up six spots in the latest NSCAA national
ranking's checking in this week at No. 13. Two weeks ago CSUDH
held the No. 25 spot, then moved up six slots to No. 19. This

and forward Dianne Garza continue their climb up the Toros
all-time record charts. Williams shutout of the Gators last Friday

spot held by former great Brandy Kaake (1994-97). With seven wins
this season, Williams now has 35 in her career just two behind
Kaake who registered 37. With 31 points this year, Garza now has
71 career points which ties her for the 6th spot with Gwen
Nakashima (1992-95). Her game-winning goal last Sunday against
Sonoma State gave her 28 career goals moving her past Teresa
Bateman (1992-93) for the 5th-place spot.

foursome of CSUDH players scoring in double figures. Garza's
team-high 31 points (12g, 7a) fall ahead of Tanya Wilson (18
pts./8g, 2a), Shannon Donnelly (17 pts./4g, 9a) and Sanoe Samatua
(10 pts./4g, 2a). In goal, Williams has now compiled a paltry 0.69
goals against average and a 7-1-1 record. She has recorded three
shutouts and has allowed only six goals win nine games. Sophomore
Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS) checks in with a respectable 1.04 GAA
and a 4-1 record.
