Shorthanded Toros Win Men's Soccer Double Overtime Thriller over UC Davis 3-2
CSUDH wins on Sean Lockhart penalty kick in 119th minute after playing a man down for over forty minutes
October 12, 2001

CARSON, Calif.-Battling for over forty minutes shorthanded, the No. 3-ranked Toros won a double overtime thriller over UC Davis 3-2 on a penalty kick by Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS) in CCAA action today at Toro Field.

It was a 2-2 game through 119 minutes when CSUDH's Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) was taken down hard just inside the box by an Aggie defender setting up Lockhart's game-winning penalty shot at 119:05. Lockhart sent his shot to the upper right corner past Davis goalie Nicholas Platter to clinch the win.

CSUDH (12-1-1, 9-0-1 CCAA) took an early 1-0 lead when Valencia knocked in his eighth goal of the year off a crossing pass from Rick Cobb (Warren HS).

The lead was short lived, however, as Aggie midfielder Jeremy Warner took a nice cross from Jared Ramsey and headed his shot to the far post just past Toros goalie Luis Morales (Banning HS) at 21:56 tying the contest 1-1.

Cal State Dominguez Hills took the lead once again early in the second period when sophomore midfielder Victor Guerrero (Century HS) was awarded the Toros first penalty shot of the game at 46:10 giving CSUDH a 2-1 lead.

UC Davis would tie the game again when at 64:14 Ryan Shaw sent a ball from Eli Carter to the far post making it 2-2.

The game remained 2-2 until Lockhart's penalty kick in the 119th minute. In the game, CSUDH out-shot Davis 19-17. Davis controlled the first overtime period with a 3-1 shot advantage. However, a combination of not being able to finish their chances and three nice saves by Morales kept them scoreless.

Morales earned the victory with four saves in goal. Nicholas Platter suffered the loss for UC Davis (7-6-1, 4-4-1 CCAA) while making six saves.

Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked No. 3 in the latest NSCAA polls, will be back in action on Sunday here at Toro Field hosting CCAA rival Chico State. First kick is set for a 12:30 pm start.
