CARSON, Calif.-Chico State surprised the No.
13-ranked Toros as the Wildcats earned a 2-0 shutout today in
California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Toro Field.
Despite out-shooting Chico State 22-10, the
Toros could not finish any of their chances while the visitors
made theirs count. Midfielder Katie Ferchland registered what
would turn out to be the game-winning shot early in the game.
Ferchland headed in a ball past Toros goalie Alba Garcia (Don Lugo
HS) at 9:57 off a corner kick from Jacklyn Rogers making it 1-0.
Forward Amy Swanson would add an insurance goal
just three minutes later. At the 12:32-minute mark, Swanson took a
crossing pass from Jenny Craighead and beat Garcia to the near
post. The Wildcats (6-5-3, 3-4-3 CCAA) defense and goalie Marina
Reyes would make it stand up as they kept the Toros scoreless for
only the second time this year.
The Toros appeared to cut the lead to 2-1 with
over six minutes left in regulation. However, Lecia Davis' goal
was disallowed by the linesman who ruled the ball had not crossed
over the goal line.
CSUDH (12-3-1, 7-3-1 CCAA), who came into the
game ranked No. 13 in the latest NSCAA polls, will return to
action on Saturday, Oct. 20 at Cal State Stanislaus. Kick off is
set for 12:30 pm.
