THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Oct. 20 #3 CSUDH @ Cal State Stanislaus Warrior Field, 3 pm
LOOKING AHEAD: The NCAA II defending
national champs, coming off two CCAA wins over UC Davis and Chico
State this past weekend, will travel to Cal State Stanislaus on
Saturday. That game begins a two-game road trip before the Toros
come home for their regular season finale hosting Cal State LA on
Oct. 27.
TOROS VS. WARRIORS SERIES NOTES: This
week's match-up against Cal State Stanislaus is the 8th all-time
meeting with the Toros holding a 6-1 series advantage. Last year
CSUDH swept the Warriors with a 5-2 win in Turlock, CA and a 2-0
victory in Carson. CSUDH has won the last five contests including
a 3-0 win earlier this year. The lone setback against CSUS was a
3-6 result on 9/23/91.
A LOOK BACK...
SHORTHANDED TOROS DEFEAT UC DAVIS 3-2 IN
OVERTIME: Battling for over forty minutes shorthanded, the No.
3-ranked Toros won a double overtime thriller over UC Davis 3-2 on
a penalty kick by Sean Lockhart (Palm Springs HS) in CCAA action
last Friday at Toro Field. The game was deadlocked 2-2 through 119
minutes when CSUDH's Gabriel Valencia (Salesian HS) was taken down
hard just inside the box by an Aggie defender, setting up
Lockhart's game-winning penalty shot at 119:05. Lockhart sent his
shot to the upper right corner past the Davis goalie to clinch the
win. CSUDH took an early 1-0 lead when Valencia knocked in his
eighth goal of the year off a crossing pass from Rick Cobb (Warren
HS). The lead was short lived, however, as the Aggies tied the
game at 21:56 tying the contest 1-1. CS Dominguez Hills took the
lead once again early in the second period when sophomore
midfielder Victor Guerrero (Century HS) was awarded the Toros
first penalty shot of the game at 46:10 giving CSUDH a 2-1 lead.
UC Davis fought back to tie the game again when at 64:14 making it
2-2. The Toros had to play with only 10 players on the field after
senior All-America defender Joe Cartlidge (Redondo Union HS) was
sent off after receiving his second caution of the game in the
78th minute. The game remained 2-2 until Lockhart's penalty kick
in the 119th minute. Davis controlled the first overtime period
with a 3-1 shot advantage. However, a combination of not being
able to finish their chances and three nice saves by Toros goalie
Luis Morales (Banning HS) kept the Aggies scoreless.
TOROS HOLD ON FOR 2-1 WIN OVER CHICO STATE:
Despite playing a man up the entire second half, the Toros 2-1 win
over Chico State on Sunday didn't come easy. Rick Cobb's highlight
header from 15-yards away turned out to be the game-winner as
CSUDH held on for the CCAA victory at Toro Field. The game was
literally deadlocked for the first half as both teams held each
other scoreless for the first 45 minutes. However, Chico's Ian
Marshall was ejected for violent conduct just seconds before
halftime when he was involved in a scramble for the ball in front
of CSUDH's goal. The Toros, playing up a man to begin the second
half, made the Wildcats pay when Sean Lockhart put CSUDH up 1-0.
Lockhart took a short pass from inside the box at 54:03 from
senior defender Kyle Thornton (W. Torrance HS), collected and
turned slipping the ball under the outstretched Chico goalie.
CSUDH took a 2-0 lead at 59:19 when freshman defender Nathan
Reeves (Lakewood HS) sent a beautiful crossing pass just inside
the box to Rick Cobb who won the ball, and headed his shot to the
back of the net. Down a man, Chico continued to put pressure on
the Toros defense. They finally broke through when Andy Pearce
took a cross from the right flank and one-timed his shot to the
far post at 78:00 cutting the lead to 2-1. But CSUDH's defense
would hold on shutting out the Wildcats the rest of the way for
the win.
WARRIOR SCOUTING REPORT: Cal State
Stanislaus enters the week with a 4-12 overall record and a 3-8
mark in CCAA play. They are 4-4 over the last eight games after
starting the season 0-8. They are coming off a split this past
weekend, upsetting Sonoma State 1-0 in overtime then dropping a
1-3 decision to San Francisco State. Francisco Benito leads CSUS
with 11 points (3g, 5a) while Patrick Carey has registered eight
points on four goals. Matthew Buckman has seen most of the time in
goal compiling a 2.34 goals against average in 14 games.
LEADING THE STAMPEDE: CSUDH has five
players scoring in double figures. Sean Lockhart leads the squad
with 28 points on a team-high 11 goals. Gabriel Valencia continues
a strong first year in a CSUDH uniform. He ranks second with 19
points (8g, 3a) while Rick Cobb is now third with 13 points.
Sophomore Eddie Gonzales-Pinto (N. Torrance HS) and midfielder
Victor Guerrero round out the five with 12 and 11 points
respectively. Goalie Luis Morales has recorded six shutouts on the
year and a 1.06 goals against average. The senior has played in
every minute of every contest owning a 13-1-1 record.
NEAR PERFECT: The Toros have now played
in as many overtime games (4) as they did all last year during
their National Championship run. In those games, CSUDH is 3-0-1
and has out-shot their overtime opponents 30-10 in the extra
periods. The Toros only overtime blemish came at San Francisco
State in the 3-3 double overtime draw.
CORNER KICKS: The team has outscored
their opponents 125-46 including a 43-17 goal advantage. In the
second period alone, CSUDH holds a 25-10 goal advantage. In four
overtime games, the Toros have outshot the opposition 30-10 in the
extra periods. The team is averaging 2.9 goals per game while
allowing only 1.1.
HOME SWEET HOME: The Toros love playing
to the home crowd as evidenced by their perfect 9-0-0 mark at Toro
Field. At home, CSUDH has dominated scoring 28 goals while holding
the visitors to only eight.
TOROS REMAIN IN TOP THREE: The Toros
kept the No. 3 spot in the latest NSCAA polls this week. Lynn
University (FL) and Lewis University (IL) lead the list. CSUDH
dropped out of the top spot for the first time in nearly a year
after their loss to Alliant University on Sept. 28.
