THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Oct 20 #17 CSUDH @ Cal State Stanislaus Warrior Field, 12:30
pm
ON TAP: CSUDH will play the first of
their two final road games on Saturday at Cal State Stanislaus.
The upstart Warriors are in second place, six points behind the
Toros in the CCAA Central Division race.
TOROS SQUEEK OUT 2-1 OVERTIME VICTORY OVER
UC DAVIS: Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) converted a penalty
kick in the second overtime period to propel Cal State Dominguez
Hills to a 2-1 CCAA win on Friday over UC Davis at Toro Field. It
was a scoreless game until the 83rd minute when Garza scored the
first of her two goals. Junior forward Shannon Donnelly (LB Poly
HS) hit a shot from the left side of the box that Aggie keeper
Christine Ogden made a diving save to her left on. However, Garza
collected the rebound at the mouth of the goal and found the back
of the net to give CSUDH a 1-0 lead with seven minutes remaining
in regulation. UC Davis sent the game into overtime tallying the
equalizer just over two minutes later tying the game with just
over four minutes remaining in regulation. CSUDH had an
opportunity to win the game in the first sudden-death period,
however, Tanya Wilson's (Palm Springs HS) shot deflected off the
top of the cross bar. Both team's defenses played well until an
Aggie defender pulled down CSUDH's Jill Toda (Gahr HS) inside the
box setting up Garza's penalty kick at 114:44. Garza set up and
hit her shot to the near post for the game-winner. Davis
controlled much of the game, especially in the first half where
the Ags enjoyed a 10-4 shot advantage. However, Williams made
several highlight saves to keep the game scoreless until the final
minutes
CSUDH UPSET BY CHICO STATE 2-0: Chico
State surprised then No. 13-ranked CSUDH last Sunday 2-0 at Toro
Field. Despite out-shooting Chico State 22-10, the Toros could not
finish any of their chances while the visitors made theirs count.
Wildcat midfielder Katie Ferchland registered what would turn out
to be the game-winning shot early in the game. Ferchland headed in
a ball past Toros goalie Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS) at 9:57 off a
corner kick from Jacklyn Rogers making it 1-0. Forward Amy Swanson
would add an insurance goal just three minutes later. At the
12:32-minute mark, Swanson took a crossing pass and beat Garcia to
the near post. The Wildcats defense made it stand up as they kept
the Toros scoreless for only the second time this year. The Toros
appeared to cut the lead to 2-1 with over six minutes left in
regulation. However, the goal was disallowed by the linesman who
ruled the ball had not crossed over the goal line.
SERIES NOTES VERSUS WARRIORS: Saturday's
match-up against Cal State Stanislaus marks only the 6th meeting
all-time between the Warriors and the Toros. CSUDH enjoys a
perfect 5-0 record against CSUS dating back to the 1998 season.
Earlier this year on Sept. 5, the Toros shutout Stanislaus 3-0
here at Toro Field. In that game, Dianne Garza scored twice to
lead CSUDH to their CCAA opening win.
WIN WILL CLINCH CCAA CENTRAL: A win on
Saturday against CS Stanislaus, the second place team in the CCAA
Central Division, will clinch the Central Division title for the
Toros. CSUDH is six points up on the Warriors with three games to
go. A win will secure a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament
with the Central Division title.
TOROS DROP TO #17 IN LATEST POLLS: The
Toros dropped four spots in the latest National Soccer Coaches
Association of America polls (NSCAA) after their 2-0 loss to
unranked Chico State last weekend. CSUDH now checks in at No. 17
in the nation and #3 in the Far West Region rankings. The Toros
highest ranking was during the week of Sept. 10 when they were
ranked No. 8 in the country.
CCAA LEADERS: The Toros have three of
the top six scorers in the CCAA Central including the CCAA scoring
leader in Dianne Garza. Garza tops the conference with 35 points
on 14 goals and 7 assists for a 2.33 points per game average.
Tanya Wilson and Shannon Donnelly are tied for second in the
central division with 18 points (1.13 ppg). Goalie Heather
Williams leads the central division in the net. Williams has a
0.67 goals against average and an 8-1-1 record. Her GAA ranks her
third among all CCAA goalkeeper's.
THE RUN OF THE TOROS: Garza continues
to lead a foursome of CSUDH players scoring in double figures.
Garza's team-high 35 points fall ahead of Tanya Wilson (18
pts./8g, 2a), Shannon Donnelly (18 pts./4g, 10a) and Sanoe Samatua
(10 pts./4g, 2a). In goal, Williams has now compiled a paltry 0.67
goals against average and a 8-1-1 record. She has recorded three
shutouts and has allowed only seven goals in 11 games. Sophomore
Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS) checks in with a 1.28 GAA and a 4-2
record. Garcia has notched two shutouts this year.
