TURLOCK, Calif.--It wasn't their best game of
the season but the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team
did what it took to defeat Cal State Stanislaus today 1-0 in
overtime. Sophomore forward Tanya Wilson's (Palm Springs HS)
Golden Goal in the 115th minute secured the CCAA Central Division
title with two games left in the regular season.
It was a frustrating game in the sense that the
Toros outshot the Warriors 21-13, but didn't have anything to show
for it until seconds into the second overtime period. CSUDH had
several good scoring opportunities in both halves, however, lack
of a finishing touch today, combined with a stingy Stanislaus
defense, sent the game into extra periods.
But at the 115:24-minute mark, Wilson found the
back of the net to propel the Toros to the win. On that play,
senior Jill Toda (Gahr HS) sent in a low, hard corner kick to the
top of the box. Backup goalie Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS), starting
at forward today for injured Dianne Garza, sent her pass to the
far post at the feet of Wilson, who hammered in her shot from
close range.
Senior goalkeeper Heather Williams (Canyon HS)
earned the shutout with five saves in the game. It is the 24th
career shutout of Williams' career which ties her for second place
in the CSUDH all-time record book. She is now 9-1-1 on the year in
goal.
Cal State Dominguez Hills, ranked #17 in this
week's NSCAA polls, elevates to 13-3-1 overall and 8-3-1 in league
play. The Toros will be back in CCAA action on Wednesday, Oct. 24
traveling to rival Cal State Bakersfield. Kick-off is scheduled
for 5:00 p.m.
