THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Oct 24 #17 CSUDH @ Cal State Bakersfield Main Soccer Field, 5 pm
Oct. 27 #17 CSUDH vs. Cal State LA Toro Field, 12:30 pm

ON TAP: The Toros will play their final regular season road game this week at Cal State Bakersfield. The squad will return home on Saturday to host Cal State LA in the regular season finale.

TOROS CLINCH CENTRAL DIVISION WITH 1-0 WIN: It wasn't their best game of the season but the Cal State Dominguez Hills women's soccer team did what it took to defeat Cal State Stanislaus 1-0 in overtime last Saturday. Sophomore forward Tanya Wilson's (Palm Springs HS) Golden Goal in the 115th minute secured the CCAA Central Division title with two games left in the regular season. It was a frustrating game in the sense that the Toros outshot the Warriors 21-13, but didn't have anything to show for it until seconds into the second overtime period. CSUDH had several good scoring opportunities in both halves, however, lack of a finishing touch, combined with a stingy Stanislaus defense, sent the game into extra periods. But at the 115:24-minute mark, Wilson found the back of the net to propel the Toros to the win. On that play, senior Jill Toda (Gahr HS) sent in a low, hard corner kick to the top of the box. Backup goalie Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS), starting at forward for the injured Dianne Garza, sent her pass to the far post at the feet of Wilson, who hammered in her shot from close range. Senior goalkeeper Heather Williams (Canyon HS) earned the shutout with five saves in the game.

SERIES NOTES VERSUS 'RUNNERS/GOLDEN EAGLES: Wednesday's match-up against Cal State Bakersfield marks 11th all-time meeting with the Toros holding a slim 5-4-1 series edge. You can throw CSUB's dismal 2001 record (5-10-2, 3-7-2 CCAA) out the window for this week's game. These two teams have developed quite a rivalry since Bakersfield began their program six years ago. To call the contests a "battle" is somewhat of an understatement. The Toros were fortunate to defeat the Roadrunners earlier this year in Carson 1-0. Erin Fieger knocked in a brilliant goal and goalie Heather Williams made nine saves - including stopping a penalty kick- to lead the Toros. Saturday's game against Cal State LA marks the 14th meeting all-time with CSUDH holding a perfect 13-0 record against the Golden Eagles. Earlier this season, the Toros won in Los Angeles 4-1.

WILLIAMS CONTINUES CLIMB: Senior goalkeeper Heather Williams (Canyon HS) continues her climb among the CSUDH all-time great's. With her shutout and win last Saturday, Williams has moved into a second place tie for career shutouts (24) and wins (37) with former Toros great Brandy Kaake (1994-97). With her next win and shutout, Williams will hold the second spot alone. Williams is currently six games behind all-time win leader Briana O'Dowd (43) and 9.5 shutouts behind O'Dowd (33.5) for the top spot in career shutouts.

CCAA ELITE: The Toros have the top three scorers in the CCAA Central Division on their roster including the league scoring leader in Dianne Garza. Garza tops the conference with 35 points on 14 goals and 7 assists for a 2.33 points per game average despite missing two games due to injury. Tanya Wilson ranks second in the division with 20 points (9g, 2a) while Shannon Donnelly is third with 18 points (4g, 10a). Goalie Heather Williams leads the central division in the net. Williams has a 0.59 goals against average and a 9-1-1 record. Her GAA ranks her third among all CCAA goalkeeper's.

THE RUN OF THE TOROS: Garza continues to lead a foursome of CSUDH players scoring in double figures. Garza has a team-high 35 points ranking her ahead of Tanya Wilson, Shannon Donnelly and Sanoe Samatua (10 pts./4g, 2a). In goal, Williams has now compiled a paltry 0.59 goals against average. She has recorded four shutouts and has allowed only seven goals in 12 games. Sophomore Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS) checks in with a 1.28 GAA and a 4-2 record. Garcia has notched two shutouts this year.

CORNER KICKS: CSUDH has outscored their opponents 121-44 on the year...only defending national champ UC San Diego has scored more points (124) in the conference...the Toros own almost a 2-1 advantage in shots (289-190)...CSUDH averages 2.4 goals per game while allowing less than one goal per contest.

HOMECOMING SET FOR SATURDAY: Saturday's games against Cal State LA will complete a full week of homecoming festivities. For the first time ever, the school has gone away from the traditional homecoming events during the Spring semester and has chosen to celebrate homecoming during the Fall semester. Saturday's festivities for soccer will kick-off with a Homecoming Tailgate Party in Parking Lot 6 beginning at 10 a.m. The King & Queen presentation will take place during halftime of the men's game.
