THIS WEEK IN TOROS SOCCER
Nov. 2 #15 CSUDH vs. Cal Poly Pomona Triton Soccer Stadium, 5 pm
Nov. 4 CCAA Championship Game Triton Soccer Stadium, 12:30 pm

WHAT'S ON TAP: The Toros completed their regular season on Saturday with a 3-1 win over Cal State LA. They now head down to UC San Diego to compete in the CCAA Championship Tournament this weekend. The Toros will take on rival Cal Poly Pomona on Friday at 5 PM. If the team is successful against the Broncos, they will play on Sunday at 12:30 for the conference title against the winner of the UC Davis/UC San Diego semifinal.

TOROS RACE TO 4-1 WIN OVER ROADRUNNERS: Cal State Dominguez scored early and often in its 4-1 win over Cal State Bakersfield last Wednesday night. The Toros drew first blood in the ninth minute when Alba Garcia (Don Lugo HS) scored her first collegiate goal on an assist from Tanya Wilson (Palm Springs HS). The Roadrunners tied the score in the 16th minute, however, CSUDH took the lead for good eight minutes later at 24:43. Freshman Sanoe Samatua (N. Torrance HS) gave the Toros the lead on a strong shot to the upper far post. Junior Lecia Davis (N. Torrance HS) added the final goal of the first half on a half volley into an open goal on an assist from Dianne Garza (Temple City HS) and Shannon Donnelly (LB Poly HS). Garza got her second assist of the night on the only goal scored in the second half. Wilson headed in a shot to the near post from a Garza cross for the final 4-1 margin of victory. The last time the 'Runners lost by a margin of three goals or more at home was in 1998. Ironically, that loss came at the hands of the Toros in a 4-1 victory.

TOROS CLOSE OUT REGULAR SEASON WITH 3-1 WIN: Tanya Wilson tallied the game-winning goal for Cal State Dominguez Hills in the 56th minute as the Toros defeated visiting Cal State LA 2-1 in California Collegiate Athletic Association action at Toro Field on Saturday. The game marked the final regular season home game for the Toros. CSUDH scored first at 19:40 when junior forward Shannon Donnelly knocked in a beautiful cross inside the box from Wilson making it 1-0. Less than two minutes later though, Cal State LA would get the equalizer when Desiree Avila knocked in a scramble in front of the mouth of the goal at 21:38 making it 1-1. It wasn't until the second period when Wilson tallied the game-winning goal. Dianne Garza sent a shot to the near post that CSLA goalie Alicia Parkhouse made a nice save on. However, she wasn't able to hold on and Wilson was there to pick up the rebound from close range for the game-winner making it 2-1. Senior defender Jill Toda (Gahr HS) would close out the scoring in the game for the Toros. Toda took the ball near midfield, beat five CSLA defenders then the goalie on a breakaway to the far post at 60:57. Heather Williams (Canyon HS) registered her 11th win of the season in goal with four saves. Four seniors were honored in pre-game ceremonies as they played in their final regular season home game. Senior midfielders Kristie McMahan (Marina HS) and Griselda Ramirez (Saddleback HS), defender Jill Toda and goalkeeper Heather Williams all played in their final home game.

WE'RE BACK!: After a one year hiatus from the CCAA Championship Tournament and postseason play, CSUDH returns to the postseason this weekend in San Diego. The Toros own a 3-1 record in the CCAA Tournament since the inception of the championship event in 1998. CSUDH won the inaugural championship with a 1-0 victory over Cal Poly Pomona in the title game.

DYNAMIC DUO: Forwards Dianne Garza and Tanya Wilson were billed prior to the start of the season as "the most exciting and lethal combinations" ever during the six-year tenure of head coach Karen Hanks. The duo has lived up to their billing. Between the two, they have tallied a total of 64 points on a combined 25 goals and 14 assists. That is the highest total since Heather Rolland and Jennifer Freeman amassed 69 points (28g, 13a) between them during the magical 1997 season when the Toros advanced to the national semifinals.

WILLIAMS IN A CLASS BY HERSELF: Senior goalie Heather Williams began her CSUDH career in exciting fashion by setting the freshman record for shutouts in a season with 10. She will end it as the Toros all-time winningest goalkeeper. Her win over Cal State Bakersfield last Wednesday marked the 44th of her career, breaking the CSUDH all-time record for career wins of 43 held by Briana O'Dowd (1990-92). She is now at 45 wins with the 3-1 victory on Saturday. Williams also ranks second on the charts for shutouts (28), third in shutouts in a season (10) and is among the top in career goals against average.

TOROS LOOK TO PASS THE BUCK: Friday's semifinal match against nemesis Cal Poly Pomona is sure to be a good one. The game will feature the league's best defense in the Broncos pitted against the CCAA's top offense in CSUDH. This rivalry runs deep but you only have to go back a couple of years to know that the games have become bitter feuds. Cal Poly holds the upper hand dating back to 1999. The Broncos defeated the Toros in the CCAA Championship game 1-0 in quadruple overtime in Rohnert Park, CA. CPP then advanced the following week on penalty kicks after the Toros and Broncos battled to a scoreless tie in the NCAA regional championship game. Last year, Pomona defeated CSUDH 2-1 then this year these two squads clashed to a 1-1 overtime draw here in Carson.

LEADING THE CHARGE: Garza leads four players scoring in double figures with 38 points on 14 goals and 10 assists. Wilson follows with 26 points (11g, 4a) then comes Shannon Donnelly with 21 points (5g, 11a). Sanoe Samatua closes out the foursome with 12 points (5g, 2a). Williams leads the Central Division with a 0.66 GAA in the net and an 11-1-1 record in 14 games.
