LA JOLLA, Calif. -- Senior midfielder Sean
Lockhart scored a goal and added an assist to lead two-time
defending champion CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS to a 3-0 win over
SONOMA STATE in the second semifinal of the 2001 California
Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Championship on
Friday.
The win improved CSUDH to 16-2-1 and pits the
Toros against UC DAVIS for the CCAA Championship on Sunday at 2:30
p.m. Sonoma finished its season at 12-7-1. UCD defeated GRAND
CANYON earlier in the day, 3-2 in double overtime.
"It feels great going for our
third consecutive CCAA Championship," CSUDH coach Joe
Flanagan said. "This is what we play for. Davis is a good and
very smart team. They can be very dangerous and it should be a
well-played match."
Lockhart opened the scoring with a tremendous
effort in the 15th minute as he slide-tackled the ball away from a
Cossack opponent and curved a shot to the upper right corner of
the net from 30 yards out.
The two squads battled for the next 55 minutes
before the Toros' Gabriel Valencia matched Lockhart's effort with
a spectacular one of his own.
After taking a pass at midfield, Valencia beat
two defenders with a pair of nifty crossover dribbles and drilled
a shot past Sonoma goalie Matt Bernard to put the match out of
reach.
"Gabe made a great run and that
seemed to breaks Sonoma State's back," said Flanagan.
Reserve Brian Suarez capped the scoring in the
84th minute. Following the ejection of Bernard for a flagrant
foul, Suarez took a feed from Lockhart, side-stepped a defender,
and scored from 10 yards out.
