LA JOLLA, Calif. -- CAL POLY POMONA scored a
pair of second half goals to beat rival CAL STATE DOMINGUEZ HILLS,
2-0 in the first semifinal of the 2001 California Collegiate
Athletic Association Women's Soccer Championship.
A typical defensive struggle between two of the
stingiest squads in the country swayed in Poly's favor midway
through the second half when freshman defender Deirdre Sweeney
scored off a touch pass from forward Michelle McConnell following
a corner kick in the 62nd minute.
Lisa Hermen added an insurance goal four and a
half minutes later when she arched a shot into the upper right
corner well out of the grasp of CSUDH goalie Heather Williams.
The win was Cal Poly Pomona's eighth straight,
a school record, and improved the Broncos to 15-2-2 on the season.
Cal State Dominguez Hills dropped to 15-4-1.
Cal Poly Pomona will attempt to win its second
CCAA title in three years on Sunday at 12 noon when it takes on
the winner of the UC DAVIS-UC SAN DIEGO semifinal. All four squads
remain in contention for three berths to the NCAA Division II
Championship that begins on Wednesday.
