Cal State Dominguez Hills Beats UC Davis to Threepeat as CCAA Men's Soccer Champion
Joe Cartlidge Scores Winning Goal In Second Half and Rick Cobb Preserves the Win Late
November 4, 2001

CSUDH-2001 Men's Soccer ChampsLA JOLLA, Calif. -- Cal State Dominguez Hills won its third straight California Collegiate Athletic Association Men's Soccer Championship with a 1-0 win over UC Davis in the championship match of the 2001 CCAA Men's Soccer Championship on Sunday.

Senior defender Joe Cartlidge scored on a header off a beautiful cross from CCAA Player of the Year Sean Lockhart in the 61st minute. Lockhart began the play with a tap corner kick and received the ball back before curving the ball into the middle of the box where Cartlidge hammered home what proved to be the game-winner. The goal highlighted a well-played defensive match that featured a pair of outstanding saves, including an unofficial one by freshman defender Rick Cobb that preserved the win.

With less than 10 seconds remaining in the match, UC Davis pushed forward and goalie Jason Kong drilled a bullet to the left side of the net and out of the reach of CSUDH goalie Luis Morales. Cobb, playing just in front of the goal line in prevent mode, met Kong's blast head on and cleared it just before time expired.

CSUDH threatened to make the match 2-0 minutes earlier when an uncontested Lockhart fired a rocket that Kong blocked to keep the Aggies within striking distance.

UC Davis was forced to play a man down the final 28 minutes of play after forward Zak Matteoli received his second caution of the match and was ejected.

The win improved Cal State Dominguez Hills , ranked 5th in NCAA Division II, to 17-2-1 while UC Davis finished its season at 13-7-1. CSUDH, the defending national champion, will await announcement of the pairings for the upcoming NCAA D-II Championship Tournament.

The Toros celebrated coach Joe Flanagan's birthday by winning their fifth CCAA Championship overall. The win was Flanagan's 100th career victory, as he is now 100-50-8 in eight years as head mentor of his alma mater.
